Finishing Touches
« on: May 25, 2013, 04:59:35 PM »
So was discussing finishes with some of my model horse peeps who have tried there hand at pony customs.  And most seem to have an issue with the spray finishes they usually use.

So I was wondering what those of you who are doing fully body repaints use to seal the whole pony?

Edit to fix word.  Duh moment.

I use Dullcote, safer on ponies and it does dry without becoming tacky :)

Spray on right?  Is still working the same after the change in formula?

I use dullcote as well. New can I bought a few weeks ago, still works the same.

Some normal sealants react different to the plastic in ponies (as do many spray on paints and primers)

Good to know that the new is working well.  So learned that not all primers play with pony plastic. LOL

Thanks for starting this! I'm one of those peeps :)

I had some issues with krylon but I don't know if it was because of me not waiting for it to cure or if it was a bad reaction...I'm nervous to try again after all the hard work I did on that Epona...hoping to get some more insight for another go...

Also, what kind of primer do you guys use? I believe I used krylon that time too. I did some pastelling on my piece which is why i needed the krylon..dullcote is way too expensive to use on every layer so i usually save it for the end (didn't on that last one though..maybe it would have fixed the issue if i sealed it in dullcote in the end I dunno). I plan on trying the modpodge for my next.

Interested in reading what everyone uses in the primer/sealer deparment.

I use Modpodge since I work with blind bags more often than bigger ponies.

RHF I had to change to gesso and hand prime the one I did.  I totally spaced and forgot I had some rustolum plastic primer.  Gonna try that on a practice body very soon.  I too wonder what others use to prime em.

I don't typically prime, but I use acrylic and not pastels.  If I were to prime I'm very lightly sand the whole pony and use a good coat of artist acrylic paint.  A lot of gessos are cheaper grade acrylic and are more brittle and tend to not adhere as well.  Good acrylics have more flexibility which helps them stay adhered to sure a soft surface.

I use Dullcote and also Mr. Super Clear UV (mostly known in the doll world) It works fine too :) I don't normally prime. But pastels will stick well to acrylic too  - thats how I use them :) They also stick decently to pony plastic in general.

I prime with Armory white primer, and seal with either Armory or Testors dullcoat. All spraycans. Lately I've been using Armory instead of Testors, cause it's a bigger can, doesn't smell as strong, and ive had better luck with it. Don't get me wrong, I love Testors, but I had a few customs come out a bit shinier than I'd like with the last can I bought, so I switched back to Armory (found in gaming-type hobby stores.)

I don't prime
In my experience, krylon products, and even the "for plastic" sprays generally stay tacky, or have some sort of adverse effect with the pony plastic (I had one I sprayed with the "for plastic" specific spray, that never did dry)
