A bow to Harryhausen
« on: May 07, 2013, 05:26:11 PM »
Aww man. I just read that Ray Harryhausen passed away. He was 92.

This man was EPIC. So anyone who wants to join me in giving him a bow, please do. Tell me your favourite movie he was involved in or what awesome creation of his inspired you the most.

Ray - thanks for inspiring my childhood with the most wonderful creatures. Jason and the Argonauts and The Clash of the Titans especially will always be very dear to my heart (and a treasured part of my DVD collection!)

RIP Ray!

Clash of the Titans, hands down.

I did love how the fancy restaurant from Monsters Inc was named Harryhausen's

Has to be Clash of the Titans (the cheesey original, NOT the cheesey remake....dude, I mean, there's bad cheese and then there's Clash)
That movie is forever ingrained in my memory as the single greatest movie ever created, followed closely by The Dark Crystal and Watership Down.
RIP, dude...next time I see one of his skeletons fighting I'll name the one on the far left after him...exit, stage left, man.

I read this and was saddened.  He was a pioneer for visual effects, truly.  RIP.

Jason and the Argonauts. Saw an MST3K-style rip on it but still loved the movie.

RIP Ray. :(

Loving all the Clash of the Titans love!

I haven't seen the remake... don't know if I want to - it looks pretty bad....

Has anyone seen many of Harryhausen's dinosaur movies? The Valley of Gwangi is truly terrible - so much so it's great fun (some terrific horses in it, too  ;)).

I honestly don't know much about his movies, but I can remember as a kid watching Turner Classic Movies when some of the dinosaur movies would come on.  I was absolutely enthralled.  I've always loved dinosaurs, and I love how smooth and, well, animated they were.  The Tyrannosaurus and Styracosaurus fight sticks out to me (I am now finding out this is the Valley of Gwangi that you said was terrible! :P ).  I love how fluid the animation is, and the dinosaurs really feel to have great weight.

I also love his trademark of having the animals' tails whip around constantly.  :D
