I kind of wonder this too.  They see that a certain pony is wanted or asked for and they make some.  I don't believe that is really the case, but you never know!

I feel like in both cases Minty is almost too good to be a bootleg or knock-off. IMO, Hasbro requested that Minty be made but later decided they did not want to market her for whatever reason so they stopped producing her in the prototype stage.

This new Minty screams prototype more than the old one did. The first one was very polished and official looking, I was so sure it was going to be released! Ah well. Only time will tell.

Its no proof of anything but I agree that its certainly interesting - especially as they have appeared so far apart in time scale.

Maybe Hasbro dangled the first Mintys in front of us to test how we'd react, if she'd be desirable and they saw our reaction, how much we want her made and now they are trying a new Minty concept...just a thought...
