Tips for gently cleaning plush?
« on: May 01, 2013, 07:32:20 PM »
I have a plush coming in the mail and I think it will need cleaned.  I don't want to ruin it, so I  need any tips for gentle cleaning you have!

Thanks very much!  ^.^

Sometimes tying them up in a pillowcase and washing on gentle works. I've done this before with dr Seuss plush and fuzzy nation plush and then air dried them and they have turned out fine

I have also done that! Others that are more delicate I wipe over with either a damp cloth, or a baby wipe, and if they have a smell you want out, air them, or dust with baby powder.

Hmm..  I'm kind of thinking from the pictures it might need somewhere between the pillow case in the washer and the baby wipes.   Would a soft hand wash with maybe Dawn soap work?   Again, I just don't want to put it in the washing machine at all.

I'll post pics and tell what it is once it arrives.  ;)

If you don't want to use the washer, I'd recommend baby wipes. They tend to work well on stains and arent typically damaging.

I'll keep an eye on this thread, though the pillowcase idea sounds like it'd work for the thrift store plush I keep forgetting to clean.

I used a waterless shampoo spray for dogs on my smelly, dirty plush and it worked great!  I am not sure how it would work on a very delicate plush, but it could be an option for you.

This isn't the exact brand I have, but it is the same general item.

I have used the pillowcase in the washing machine for quite a few plush.

I had one that I could not find any information on whether or not it could be washed. So, I used oxy clean (spray) and a moist cloth. Took out a LOT of stains. I then put in the pillowcase in the dryer on air fluff, the "fur" ended up wonderful.

Pretty sure I heard this from "How Clean is Your House?" take a small basin and put a few drops of liquid dish soap, run water into the basin to make lots of foam and scoop the foam (no water) onto a wash cloth and rub gently with that. Use as needed. Then take a second cloth/ hand towel and wet it with warm water till barely damp, squeeze/ wring it out really well, if needed, and wipe it down again with that. You can then air dry, sun dry or blow dry on a low setting.

Definitely reiterating the pillowcase in the wash with some very gentle detergent.

Just one thing to remember is to use Cold water & air dry in the washer dryer. Plush are made (and usually filled) with plastic fibers (fake fur, fleece, minky, synthetic batting) and hot water / hot air drying will melt and distroy the material.

I've found Folex works really nicely for spot cleaning on light coloured materials. Bought it at Walmart I believe. Just spray it on the dirty spot, rub in with fingers and rinse with cool water and let air dry.

Drat, the plush I wanted to clean has a voice box, no pillowcase for me. (It barks when you squeeze it.) Did my best with foaming hand soap and a damp towel...

Thanks so much for all the tips!   I might give the baby wipes or foam a try once the plush in question arrives.  It just looks a little dingy in pics is why I think it needs cleaned.

This is similar to my situation.  There is something inside that makes noise and I don't want it to get flooded with water!
