3D print
« on: April 28, 2013, 02:11:47 PM »
ok I'm a little behind in the technical/computer world.. What is a 3D print?? I found one of Octavia today..

It is printing with layers? I know they exist but surely not on the market yet. cause that would be expensive

the link below is to the deviant art I found. I would love other pictures of 3D prints

They're real, they're on the market (though not to consumer use yet, I think) and yes, expensive.

World of Warcraft has 3D printing of your characters via separate group. I haven't seen it much otherwise, just here and there, once in awhile.

My dad actually built one- he made a little blob thing the other day as a test. I can't be of much help though, I saw it and STILL can't wrap my poor mind around it.

A 3D print is made from a 3D printer. 3D printers are tools for engineers and manufacturers. They design a part   or concept with 3D modelling programs and can print a prototype design out for colleagues to look at and pass around at a meeting or whatever they need it for.

It is supposed to be an cheap and easy way to present a concept before mass manufacturing.

Different printers use different materials; some are a harder plastic, and others are of a less durable, styrofoam-like substance. After its printed, you have to clean up the print and cut or break of any excess material.

I am sure anyone could get a 3D printer, however they are very expensive, and would be found more at companies and schools.

And there are people that make their own 3d printer from a kit or parts, and they aren't terribly expensive that way.

Example of Fluttershy being printed on a self-built 3d printer (video is sped up): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6WnkmzP1ZY
The same YouTube user has videos of other ponies being printed.

Yes, they are real - I have one. :>

Here's a pic of a recent (yet unfinished since I have to wait for better weather conditions to proceed) print of mine. ^^

I would love to have a play with one.

I was watching this documentary about a company in London that do models for architects using a 3D printer.
Apparently they make a fortune and the architects get stuff in days that would normally take months.
