Restoring yellowed playsets; reproduction labels
« on: April 16, 2013, 11:51:37 AM »
Sorry if there's already topics about these somewhere, or if they're dumb n00b questions.  I haven't seen any such topics yet, though, so hopefully I'm safe.

What's the best way to go about de-yellowing large items like playsets?  My Dream Castle and other sets are horribly yellowed and I'd like to brighten them up, if I can.  I know that small pieces can be soaked in hydrogen peroxide, but that's obviously not feasible with something the size of a playset.  I've heard that smearing whitening toothpaste with peroxide on yellowed plastic will restore it too - has anyone had any luck with this?  How long does it take to work?

My second question is about labels for the playsets - are reproductions sold anywhere online?  There are places like Reprolabels that sell sticker sheets for Transformers and other vintage toys, but I haven't seen any MLP labels at these places.

If you have any advice on either of these subjects, I'd love to hear it!  Thanks in advance.

I think there are some sights that have scans of the original play set labels in fact here's one place that has replacements for the dream castle you can print them out and there's directions for reapplying them

as for fixing yellowing I know there was a chemical someone used that was similar to peroxide but it was specifiably designed for plastic. I've used it on some vintage G.I. Joe stuff and it worked great but I can't remember what it's called. I'm sure someone else will be able to help

Oh, that looks great!  As long as my printer can handle printing on glossy label paper, this will solve my decal problem.  Thanks!

Have you considered sunfading parts of your playsets?  I tried that with my Pretty Parlour last summer - I did get some resultage, though I'm going to give it a better go this summer, hopefully we'll have a long, hot one again this year.  Here's the link to my (short) thread about it:

http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,300792.0.html

A couple weeks gave these pretty good results, and though I haven't gotten much further, I'm game to try again this summer. ^.^

Anyway, good luck with the brightening, and keep us posted as to how it works! ^.^

Wishlist - I'm back on (semi-) active buying again... can't buy everything on my wish list all at once (yay, back-to-school and tuition fees), but I am still looking to plump up my collection a bit more: http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,380638.0.html

I was thinking of the info on FarDreamers side - the experiment that emery did thats the best tutorial and examples I have seen. But I have heard people have success with the same cream on white and coloured play sets in order to bleach on the yellow. The only thing I would note is that peroxide like that on hard plastic can cause the plastic to become brittle - but as long as you are just perhaps a little more careful when moving it you should be fine.

StarGleamer also hosts a site which has some playset stickers - http://www.fatamorganaphotography.com/stickers.html - this site and the one linked above are the only 2 I am aware of.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
