Leaking plasticizer... how long?
« on: April 15, 2013, 02:14:33 PM »
I got my hooves on two reasonably pretty - though rock-solid - TE Sky Rockets at my local thrift shop a while back, and they both have gooey leaky plasticizer stuff on the insides only.  I washed both with Dawn and set to dry, but both seem to still have gooey plasticizer gunk on their insides.  Is this an ongoing process for ponies that will eventually subside?  Will I need to rewash and so on until the goo gets gone?  I'm eager to have Sky Rocket on display - they're both really purple, and everything else seems in pretty great shape... except for the creeping ooze!  Help/insight appreciated, thanks! ^.^

Wishlist - I'm back on (semi-) active buying again... can't buy everything on my wish list all at once (yay, back-to-school and tuition fees), but I am still looking to plump up my collection a bit more: http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,380638.0.html

Ew gross! I'm so sorry you have to deal with that.  Ive only heard about it never actually seen it before.  There is an old arena thread on it here http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,295043.0.html apparently it can take a long time like years for the process to complete.  Someone recommended dusting with baby powder to help make it less gross.

Hope it passes quick for you and good luck!

The baby powder thing is a great idea! I leu of that you can use cornstarch.. but at least it's only on the insides right :3

Yucky, evil plasticiser!

Yes, it does essentially need to all come out before the stickiness is going to stop. Baby powder is good for soaking it up and making it more manageable. However you need to make sure you still wipe it down before and after application of baby powder as other wise it clumps together or will leave a surface residue of dried up baby powder. You need to repeat the process until the stickiness no longer comes back.

In addition, you can use rubbing alcohol for a similar treatment.

There is no set pattern as to how long or show short a period it will take for this to finish. Perhaps you could display them now and then just retreat occasionally?
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
