Can you pierce their ears?
« on: April 10, 2013, 07:14:34 AM »
Can you pierce a MH doll's ears? What would you use to pierce the ears so the holes are the proper size to fit MH earrings? My Frankie doesn't have earrings, although I can see the indentations where her piercings should be. If I get her fashion pack, I think I'd like to use the earrings that come with it.

I've used a needle I've heated.....just held the needle over a match flame.   I had to swirl it around a bit as the hole wasn't quite big enough but it worked pretty well.

Someone once mentioned using a pushpin. I tried that and it worked well for me.

I use a hot needle like red hot from a lighter. Never had much of a problem with black residue, but you can mostly avoid it by use a new needle each time. I typcally just wipe the needle or plastic off, but a small bit of black dont bother me as an earring covers it up.

somebody also had a tip, that after you pierce with the needle you can use a toothpick to get the hole to stretch.

I've used the smallest drill bit I could find and hand drilled my holes

I punctured the indentation with my exacto knife and then just stuck an earring in to widen the hole. Worked fine if you're like me and don't trust yourself with heated needles or power tools.

I  tried with a needle, but I'm just so squeamish and I was afraid to break my Opie that I gave up.

Off topic, for the longest time I thought Bob the Builder was called Powertool Pete, because he is called Puuha Pete in Finnish.

I just use one of my wife's sewing needles. I don't even bother to heat it up first. I just poke it a couple of times and dig out a little of the plastic, then squeeze the doll's head so the hole opens up a little more before gently twisting the earring in. Once an earring's been in there for a while, when you take it out, the hole will stay large for a bit, so it's easier to swap earrings in and out.

I used a manual finger drill, and then stuck a toothpick into the holes for a while, then after taking them out, quickly put the earrings into the holes and that's it! did it to my SL Venus with her Signature release faceup.

JMHO, a pin vise might be the safest way to go.

http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/hca/hcahcar0696.htm shows an example. They usually come with bits in several sizes, and the drilling can be done at the rate of speed and amount of pressure you feel safest with.

(is that what you used, LuvlyMelody?)

Oh, so that's what they're called. :P *google searched Pin Vise* Pretty much yeah, that little screwdriver/non electric drill tool was what I used. XD

I used (and by that I mean got my boyfriend to do it for me, as it technically belongs to him) a dremel with the smallest dremel piece he had. I luckily found a dremel piece the same size as the earring posts. It looked very easy to do though, as long as the doll's head is very secure, so next time I get a non-pierced doll I'm going to have a go myself.

I used a nail.  I found that I had to make the hole a tiny bit bigger than the earring to make it fit, though, since the vinyl likes to shrink back up around the hole.  I used this on DC Operetta.

I'm a little more antsy about DC Robecca, since she doesn't have any grown-together piercing holes to use as a guide.
