Showing off my Baby Rat Litter!
« on: April 04, 2013, 11:36:42 PM »
I have been crazy about rats for almost my whole life.
Over the last 4 years I have been breeding them too :)
We have all types.

This is Grandmother, My favorite rat in the world! Her name is Checkers and she was my first Odd eye :)
But our current litter is by Vitani X Falcor

 Vitani

Both parents are Dumbo Odd eyed Bluebeige barebacks as are their grandparents, but it's not something that even with linebreeding pops up very often.

I am happy that TWO of the pups in our current litter have are odd eyed!

And here is the rest of the litter, all lovely bareback bluebeige. Some came out with pink eyes and some with a very dark ruby :)

Rats are incredible pets, they're not as active in the cages as Mice are (though they are if there's food!) They absolutely love affection, more than any other rodent I've had!

Your rats are adorable! I have always thought that rat pups look like puppies when they are first born and for a week or so after. I love how curious and intelligent rats are and would love to have one as a pet someday. Sadly, it's illegal to own rats as pets where I live as my area is supposedly "rat free" and that includes pets :(

Definitely I do!
I have been trying to breed for this for a lot of years and ever since finding out about them many many years ago I've been totally in love ^_^

It's not like Dumbo ears where if both parents have it then all of the offspring will, kindof an elusive trait. Both mother and father need to be odd eye carriers, That is HW (high white) and you will most often find rats who have odd eyes,  have markings that can either carry ruby or pink eyes (such as fawns and beige) and lots of flashy white markings. ^^

My ultimate breeding goal is to have hairless odd eyes. It's a hard thing to do because adult hairless loose all traces of markings and colour, so it's hard to see if they have a lot of flashy white and markings as well as colours known to carry both eye types. I also have to be careful with HW because it is a trait prone to carry megacolon. Luckily for me my line does not carry it, so I am hesitant to outcross unless I reallly know the bucks lineage well.

Hairless or not, I love my little winky lazerbeam eyed babies ^_^

I can't own a ratty. I'm actually dangerously allergic to them, but I still find them cute. But I've always wondered about that odd-eye thing. Does that effect their sight at all?

I miss the rats we had at college, my first couple of years we had two black and white 'normal' rats and two grey/blue dumbos and they were so sweet. :D

It does a bit, but no more than having an albino rat would.
Albino rats are more sensitive to bright light than dark eyed rats and also have poorer vision. Rats with a single dark and a single black eye tend to wag their heads from side to side if they are trying to concentrate on seeing something. Rats have pretty crappy vision anyhow (they cannot see much past 4 feet) but the Oddlings are definitely known to focus more with their black eye... and the wagging and bobbing is actually pretty darned cute!

Sorry to hear you're allergic! I had a freind that was, where the rats would walk on her skin she'd get hives. Very sad since she really liked the little bebes.

Aww, all rats from the most common black hooded to the most exotic are beautiful.
I have a blue rex, I love that ghostlike colour! And Dumbos certainly do have their charm with those low set ears :3

In my extensive experience, I've found that the black eye gene makes the rats more likely to have sight problems, for some odd reason (and by this I mean things like black eyed siamese etc, rather than 'natural' black eyes if you get me).

Lovely babies :) Looking forward to being out of lockdown so we can work on our next litters.
