Poor Baby Doodles - Help
« on: April 01, 2013, 06:07:37 PM »
Found this little pony at thrift... (check my Brag later, I found 3 gens on one trip!)

My favorite mold of G1 babies!!! (second only to the same ones as Uni's)

So. What can be done???  What has caused the gross discoloration? Is it possible to fix?  I've never fixed tail rust before so I really have no idea.

Thanks!

If she's super rusty on the inside, it's probably because the rust has gotten so bad it's discolored the pony herself.

Aww... poor pony!
When I see a little one like this, it's impossible to stop the itch to want to restore her!
Pop her head and tail off and clean as much of the gunk from the inside as you can. Sometimes having darkness inside of the body is enough to visibly alter the colour of the pony. I had a light coloured pony.. (baby snippy?) who I thought was discoloured on the outside but it turned out that the mold from herinsides was so dark it just made it look like it though the plastic.

Do as much scrubbing as you can that way and then soak her body in an oxy clean solution.. Use MrClean Magic Erasers on the outside and lots of elbow grease (careful of those symbols though!)

For her tail you can soak the rusty bit in nailpolish remover and manipulate with your fingers to work it though. Use lots of conditioner when you're though and avoid soaking the whole tail as it can sometimes make the hair dry...

Lastly, I'd love it if you'd post pics when she's had her makeover, I'd love to see the transformation!!

Well for normal tail rust I use toothpaste and a lot of elbow grease. That looks pretty badly discoloured though.

I thought maybe sunfading, but the symbols would probably fade too. This baby came with a diaper, didn't she? Maybe the discolouration could be hidden if it isn't removable..?

For tail rust, I've had luck with just toothpaste (and it was a pretty bad case). Definitely take her apart and see what's going on inside, though. A lot of the issues there might make the outside look better after they're attended to.

thanks everypony.  maybe I'll get brave and pop her head off...  I'm sure there's tutorials 'round here somewhere.  I'll post pics.

besides being my fav baby pose, my daughter has a pretty mint Noodles and it would be just perfect to have the set!

wish me luck!

you might try popping her head off. and soaking her in lemon juice..that will get rid of the rust. then you will prob have to try sun bleaching her.

But try lemon juice before any harsh chemicals

well I soaked her in oxyclean for 15 mins. and the rust came off the tail and I cut the washer off and plan to replace it with a zip tie.  scrubbed her insides with a tooth brush.

so... WHEW!  that all came out ok..

Any advice about her yellow rump before I put her back together?  it persists, didn't go away with oxy.

Baby Twins are probably my all time favorite G1 babies. I love the unicorn pose as well as this pose and I have tons of them!

I don't know what the yellowing really is but it's hard to say if sunfading is a good option since her pink will fade as well. It doesn't look like marker stain or anything like that. It looks like she was left out in the elements for a while and just discolored?

^ I guess I wouldn't mind a completely sunfaded Doodles.  Is it possible to do evenly?

I believe so, you'd have to make sure sunlight was evenly on the pony and turn her every once in a while to make sure all parts got equal sunlight. There's a sunfade tutorial somewhere here that I follow.

The only colors I have personally faded are yellow and light blue ponies. My collection is displayed against a wall where sunlight would never reach to keep "fading pink" haired ponies from discoloring ( hair ).

I am afraid sunfading is your only option here, good thing summer's coming :)

As for saving her symbols, there was a tutorial where someone painted over the symbols with actual paint (plastic, not oil paint) and they then easily removed it with no harm done. Maybe you can try searching for it
Alternatively you can try to put something else over the symbols while the pony is being sunfaded.
