Does anyone know why Baby Nightsong and Baby Explorer etc. are made from shiny, hard plastic, unlike the other ponies?

I believe it was their 'gimmick', since they were meant to be the European alternate to the starlight ponies.

Yes as Las Pegasus says it was just their particular gimmick to suit the set. Their set after all is the "starlight" set so no doubt to get that kind of shiny sparkly effect, the plastic used and finished had to be a little different.
