OMG. instant cure for dehair-hand (stiffness and pain)
« on: March 16, 2013, 06:54:40 PM »
Or very close to instant!

I just completed a really difficult de-hair (think TONS of glue) and afterwards I had the worst dehair-hand I've ever had.

My palm was red, swollen, throbbing, and there was a vein/blood vessel/whatever like literally popping out. It was ugly.

I plunged my hands into super-hot salt water... and after just a few minutes (all I could stand at that temperature) my hand was almost completely NORMAL.

Holy cats. There's still a tiny bit of soreness, but my hand is almost totally back to normal, after just five minutes in a hot saltwater bath.

Anyone else have fabulous cures for customizing woes?
:D

Good music makes the time go by, and sometimes I like to put all the ponies that I'm prepping in boiling water and pretend I'm making a stew.

Have band-aids nearby when using an exacto knife.

I cut my finger pretty good one time and was lucky we had them close. Thankfully it wasn't as deep as I expected.

Oh will be trying the salt bath!! I once did a heap of g3's, with insane amounts of glue, and couldn't use my hands the next day. Great thread topic!!!!

That is an awesome remedy, I hate how my hands feel after ripping those plugs out. Rehairing can get pretty dull so I usually watch a good tv show or a movie while I do it, makes the time go by quicker.

if I'm going to be doing something extra hard on my hands I do it wearing leather gloves. helps minimize the damage by the time I'm done. I bet if you combined that with the salt water bath it would be awesome.

Seriously tho- try Epsom salts in hot water. Those help a lot too.

My hands don't get like that. I do get blisters on my thumb and first finger from the loops on the forceps. I think I permanently damaged a nerve in my thumb as it seems to go numb or tingles ever so often, specially after I de-hair.

The most I've de-haired in one sitting was 6 and they were stiff then. I'm never going to do that many again.

coinop - LOL, stew!! pony stew, yummm....

CSA - that made me lol too :P

Danny - my x-acto knife is my best friend but it also terrifies me!!

kezrob - oh G3's are the worst for glue!

Phoenix - I almost always have a movie in when I'm customizing, especially for rehairing!

enchantress - LOL - too bad I can't drink anymore, boo.. yes, epsom salt is the best!

Nichi - gloves!! I didn't think about that. I may be stealing hubby's leather gloves for my next de-hair.

Aednatia - ugh yes, blisters... i have a huge one this morning! :(

I'll definitely try that! The last time I de-haired, I did 15 ponies at once and I felt like my hand was going to fall off. XD

How I wish I'd seen this a few days ago lol.
I had a load of bait ponies (nice, glue filled G3's, of course) that I stripped the other day, including an old custom of mine who had a bad paint job (brush strokes everywhere as I painted her before I had my airbrush) and needed to be stripped. Would you believe, she was actually the hardest of all? Even worse than hasbro. And that's saying something.
I'm paranoid about the hair coming out, so I pour a load of glue in the head after rehairing. Wish I hadn't on this one, though. In the end the head split merging all the plugs into one  :( So looks like I'll be trying to sculpt hair for the first time. That can only end well...
But back on topic, my right hand at the end of it was quite painful. After using my pliers as both pliers and a chisel on that many pony heads (not to mention cutting the raised symbol off of a bait G3 Hidden Treasure.. Never again, please  >_<..), my hands had had all they could take for one evening.

And now everyone wants to know where you found small long needle nose pliers. I know I can't find any that will fit into a g4 head.
