Advice on the wing I just sculpted, please?
« on: March 16, 2013, 07:34:41 AM »
I'm really not the best at drawing wings, and sculpting them, it seems, i'm even more worse at.

But, I powered through, although I may have picked a strange pose for the wings, which may have made it harder for me!

Okay, without further interruptions, here are the photos

I spent two hours on it last night, but I am willing to scrap it and start again, as I've only done one wing.
Please can I have advice and critique? I would like to create to the best of my ability, as I hope to sell this custom when I'm done.
Thank you for your help!

You have good sculpting technique! Have you tried looking at pictures of bird wings? I think that'd help you with making the joints look more realistic.
The style of feathers you have here looks more like leaves.. which, if that's what you're going for, is good! If you want more of a bird thing, though, here...

You can see that the feathers vary in length and that there are several layers. The higher up layers, with the shorter feathers, are more soft and won't have as much detail.
The longer feathers have more noticeable barbs, although most of the barb is covered by the feathers on top of it.. that's a stylistic thing. and the parallel barbs won't usually be as defined as the main barb.

Hope that helps! Of course, they don't have to be realistic, but I think understanding how wings work is a good base to work off of when you're doing stylized wings.

I love the details of the feathers! But it looks like you bent the wing backwards. Wings on a bird come out from the 'shoulder' area and have two joits in them, at the 'elbow' and at the 'wrist' (using human terminology here). You have the elbow joint bending the wing forward toward the front legs, but on a bird the elbow joint would be bending the wing back toward the tail end of the creature.

Hope that made sense! XD Kinda hard to describe.
Thank you Thimble for my amazingly cute avatar!

Thank you both! I agree that the feathers do look like leaves, I remember thinking do as I made the last few! oh dear.
Dainty, those links are very helpful, thank you, and I must agree with you, dragon flitter, I was attempting to make them look wind swept towards the front, but of course wings don't work like that!
I think I'll take a moment to re-draw my design and do something far simpler.

I like that they look like leaves, the only advice I would echo is the position. They don't sit naturally like wings should on any animal. I think they look super nice though!

I actually just angled the wing up to see what it looks like, and yes, it looks so much better.
I over-complicate things so badly sometimes! I'll stick to the basics with this custom, I think!
I'll be taking my sculpting stuff home with me over the easter holidays so I hope to finish her then and get some good photos of her!

I think it's a very wonderful start! I'll chime in here and say you might want to use a mesh wire base so you don't have an issue with the wing falling and you have more of a stable area to work on. Anytime I have an issue with wings is because my stability falters.

I also find it helps to think of a chicken wing when sculpting so I can get the joint position correct :)
