« on: March 09, 2013, 12:33:24 AM »
Im always looking for new ways to draw ponies. Id love a how to guide if anyone knows of one?

I would love to learn to draw both G3 and G4 versions and eventually come up with my own creation. So if anyone has how to draw guides they can link me to i would love it :)

Oh, there are many usefull tutorials on how to draw ponies on many different sites like Deviantart and Tumblr. These are one of the some that I found really usefull:

http://dshou.deviantart.com/art/MLP-Basic-Anatomy-Study-1-Basics-317485624
http://dshou.deviantart.com/art/MLP-Basic-Anatomy-Study-2-Front-Legs-317774146

http://mylooneypony.deviantart.com/art/How-to-Draw-MLP-FIM-Tutorial-303721557

Also, I recommend looking up official artwork and screenshots (or vectors of characters in various poses from the show) for reference.

When it comes to older gens... well, I haven't seen that many tutorials of them... my advice is to do the same as with G4 - use official artwork and screenshots for reference, and try experimenting. I found myself doing that when trying to draw some G1-related artwork - I try using a mixed style from "Rescue at Midnight Castle" and "Friends" with a few touches of my own.

Hope this helps. :)

There's a G3 book that tells you how to draw ponies.

When I started drawing ponies, I began by studying real horses and their anatomy, then moved on to trying to stylize them~ Check out some horses, break up the anatomy into simple shapes and try drawing them like that~ Then, study the proportions of the art style that you're trying to emulate. How long/thick are the legs? What do the heads look like viewed from various angles?

It takes a LOT of practice, but don't get frustrated, and don't be afraid to use references!

I have to second Rika's suggestion of studying horses and actual anatomy of how they're built together. basic knowledge of how a body is put together before going stylized route helps a lot.

Here is one that is useful.. though the style is closer to G1 it should help with basic drawing

http://sd-dreamcrystal.deviantart.com/art/How-to-draw-a-MLP-Tutorial-180829449

Sadly I don't think anyone has done a G3 style tutorial and most of what you will find out there now is for G4... which is a shame. But as others have stated, studying horse anatomy will also help, heck I tend to look at drawing horse tutorials in general for certain things that stump me or ref off of line drawings to see how some of the lines go in most cases
