Alternate cleaning supplies for ponies?
« on: March 01, 2013, 12:22:09 PM »
I'm looking at a pile of thrift/2nd hand ponies here in my room that need to be cleaned, some of the poor things have nasty looking black stuff that I don't know could be mold or what, but I'm just wondering if some expert pony cleaners out there have any advice:

What kinds of alternate cleaning solutions can you use on ponies?
I have some basic all-purpose cleaner 409, nail polish remover, and dishwasher soap. I also have toothpaste just in case of rust.
Is this enough to fully disinfect/clean a pony with what could possibly be mold on the inside?

Also, I have no idea what 409 cleaner could do to a pony so I thought I'd ask if it's a good idea or not  :lookround:

Thanks! I know my ponies would appreciate any help. ^.^

I'm not sure about any of that stuff but I use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and it gets just about everything off.

I'm trying to refrain from buying anything extra unless there's absolutely no way to clean a pony with the stuff I already have. Not sure if dishwashing soap & 409 will work though...

Id go with two things.. oxy clean .. and mr clean magic erasers.. they get bloody well near everything off between the two of them..
for extra kick in cleaning dip the magic eraser IN the oxy clean water..
neither is very expensive.. you can pick up both at your local family dollar for about a buck apeice!

I completely agree with this.  Magic erasers are awesome and totally worth the extra couple of dollars.

I wouldn't use 409 as it might be too harsh.  Dish washing soap should b fine on the hair but I would condition afterwards.  Good luck!  :)

409 worked well to remove rust from a BBE.  That and a toothbrush.

I'm like you, don't want to have to buy stuff to clean ponies if I can use what I already have. So yeah, I use toothpaste and a brush for general cleaning on all my ponies. You don't actually need a disinfectant to get rid of mold either since soap will kill it, and once it dries out, it can't really survive anyway. Though I have poured peroxide inside ponies to help get rid of mold, so that's another possibility, if you have non-chlorine bleach.

My signature actually has a link to a list of various things people have tried on ponies (successfully and not), if that would help.

I use a mixture of dishwashing soap and (whitening) toothpaste for tail rust since toothpaste alone doesn't always work for me. It may work on other areas of the body as well.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. :) I think I might try 409 on the inside of the ponies, and leave dishwashing for the outside. The closest thing near me right now is a target, so I can try to find a magic eraser there if I feel like going out.

That list is super helpful, Elisto! I will have to bookmark it!

Glad it helps! Though keep in mind that it's not complete and some positive and negative effects of some products are missing. I'm trying to decide where I can put it so that I can continue to edit it.

I agree that for the couple of $ it costs a magic eraser is awesome and baking soda is a great pony cleaning item to have around as well.

However, if you only want to use what you have I would leave off on using the 409 at the moment [I always thing its best to tread on the side of caution and really only use aggressive cleaning chemicals if you have no luck with more gentle solutions]. Initially for inside see how you get on with soaking in a boiling water soap solution and then scrubbing with toothpaste - honestly repeating that a couple of times should remove the worst. A soft cloth and a good scrub with the soap/hot water should hopefully make an initial difference on the outside for areas with in ground dirt you ll need a toothbrush.

Good luck! I cant wait to hear how you get on.
