Best way to achieve an even mane
« on: February 26, 2013, 05:28:09 AM »
I had a quick search around the forum, but couldn't find any descriptions of how to tidy up rehaired manes.

This is probably a basic skill but I'm new to rehairing having just done the one (Baby Honeycomb).  I found it hard to get a nice, straight edge to her mane.  >_<

Does anyone have any cool tips on how to do this?  Do you pre-measure before rehairing or use special scissors or a craft knife?  I did try attaching sellotape to the bottom to keep the nylon strands together, then trimming throught it.  This worked pretty well, but think it could be better.

Many thanks in advance  :thumb:

I just hold the hair out when I'm done and cut it.

I do the same as Kaoskat.  Wetting down the hair can keep all the strands together, and you can brush them out straight on a flat surface.  Actually, though, I have the opposite problem--I want my hair to look factory-haired, so I'm always trying to avoid that end-chopped straight look :).

I pull it out straight, cut it, and then to get a more factory look rather than a chopped look I have a cheap little hair feathering razor tool that my hairdresser uses to give my hair layers to feather out the ends and get rid of the chopped look

i just kinda do it like hairdressers cut hair... eyeball each section im cutting to the same length, and follow the curve of the neck, so the forelocks wont be say, 7 inches and the rest 5 or 6. if that makes sense.

I don't generally do any cutting, per se, just a little trimming up on any bits that are glaringly the wrong length. I mean, the pieces I rehair with are all the same length and are all folded perfectly in half, so it usually ends up looking fine on its own. I don't generally like the perfectly straight line cut if I can help it. Hasbro ponies generally aren't perfectly straight at the ends of the hair anyway, because it's not like they had a person trimming all the pony hair by hand at the factory ;)

 :haha: I like it!

Thanks for all the tips peeps, this is just the info I was looking for.  I've had a mint Sky Flier for a few years but she's had a mane trim in a previous life.  It's been bugging me for a while, so I've got some replacement hair for her.  :)

Ooh, this is a good thread to stalk!  :ninja:

I've had problems with that too with my first few customs. Lately, I've found that if you want to do like a neck curl or calm the forelock down, do that first and then trim it so that you can see how it will fall. I've done a few customs with shorter hair and if I hadn't styled them first, I would have run into some problems because the short hair won't cooperate as well as keeping it long.
