Goofy-looking monster toy from the '60s?
« on: February 24, 2013, 10:52:28 AM »
My mom had this little guy when she was young and she gave him to me when I was about 7. We both loved him. He was just too silly and cool. I unfortunately don't have any photos and I'm not sure if I even still have him anymore, but I do have this bad laptop-mouse drawing.

He was a little monster and his body was like a big yellow stalk, and was ribbed kind of like a snake belly. The body itself was made of rubber and it had some wire running through it so you could bend him. He had no legs, but he did have two bird-like feet with claws, and I always sort of imagined him moving through a hopping motion.

His face is a little fuzzier in my memory but I do know that he had two eyes and a big round teal nose. His tongue was either pink or blue (left it white) and I do remember it being made of felt. I don't remember what the rest of his face looked like or how it was connected to his body. (So I didn't draw it.) But he also had red, fluffy "clown hair" on each side. I remember the hair being kind of an odd texture, but it was probably softer when it was new.

Any clues on this? It's just so weird and I love it.

It looks rather familiar... I'll ask my mother if she has any ideas. :)

Still looking. Unfortunately if its not a name brand then there's going to be little info about it.

Hmm... it's quite possible that it could be a local dime store toy. My mom bought a lot of her toys from this place that was apparently an Indiana chain with an Indianapolis manufacturer. I can't be completely sure though.

I did email her this thread and ask her some more about it, like where she remembers getting it and what approximate year it would have been. So far she hasn't gotten back to me though. :(

Thanks for trying though, ponies. I really appreciate it! :frolic:

I see  a 1965 line called creeple people with similar body shape and fluffy hair. *searching*

Similarly Zoofie Goofies.

Hmm, I really don't think those are it, Sarah, since both of those seem to be crafting machine-oven toys akin to Creepy Crawlers. Still, I can't thank you enough for trying!

I should also mention that my little guy is about half a foot tall, and his feet lay flat on the ground, allowing him to stand up on his own. (I just noticed that in my drawing it kind of looks like his feet are limp, but they were actually the most secure part of his body.) Even though his body was bendy, it was sort of like... I don't know, kind of a stiff bend, if that makes any sense. You could move him, but not super well... it's quite difficult to explain. But I do know that it would have been wires that were making him bend because by the time he eventually got to me, they were poking out of the bottom of his feet. I used to prick myself on them all the time during play.

Oooh, I recognize that, Sunshine! That's Lowly Worm by Richard Scarry! My grandma used to read me all of his books when I was small, and there was a cartoon series on Nick Jr.! (The Busy World of Richard Scarry).

I'll give those names a shot, Sarah.

Lowly Worm! I don't think it's him, lol.

The drawing is honestly kinda creeping me out. If that's what the toy looks like I'd be scared!
