best way of cleaning/maintaining ponies with glitter symbols??
« on: February 24, 2013, 04:08:37 AM »
Hey there!  I have some grubby ponies I need to clean up and some have glitter symbols.  I usually dunk the ponies in a warm Sterident solution (denture cleaner) and they clean up quite nicely with that, but I am wary of putting my glittery ponies in since I have not done them before (fear of the unknown I think  :( ).  Will they stand up to this treatment?  Or is there another, better way of doing them??

Also, should the worst happen (ever the optimist me  :P ) how would one go about re-glittering the ponies??

I would be hesitant to try that too, since OxiClean removes glitter symbols.

Have you tried a magic eraser?  Just don't rub at the symbols themselves.

I'm not sure what an equivalent might be where you're at.

I don't know what name they go by in the UK. They're melamine foam, originally made to insulate pipes. They're white and look like little sponges. :) If you have sensitive skin wear gloves.

I wet and lather mine with bar soap first, and first lather and rinse the pony, then use the eraser. I go around painted areas while using them to lift up dirt and work gently. Essentially what they do is act like a very fine sandpaper, so if you scrub hard with them you can make the edges of a pony rough (ear, nose, horn tips, around hooves) of course also you can wear down paint or strip off a layer of glitter. I use a corner and draw around the glitter, or painted symbols.

They will not remove any stains that have bleed into the vinyl.

Debenhams and Amazon sell Magic Eraser made by JML. It's fab stuff, it comes as one block that can be cut into smaller pieces, I paid £5!  ;)

If you can't get a magic eraser, maybe try something simpler, like a soapy washcloth, to clean the pony up. I rarely resort to using a magic eraser on the whole body, even on really dirty ponies. A damp cloth with a little soap works wonders. =) Just don't use it directly on glitter symbols.

For magic erasers you have a couple of options you can pick up the Dr Power Erasers in most supermarkets, Asda and Sainsburys certainly stock them in the laundry aisle. Lakeland Ltd also do them and another couple of brands if you have one of them local to you. But 99p/£1 or Discount/Bargain World stores also carry a product called Sponge Eraser and it does the exact same thing. Prices will vary from 99p up to about £5 depending on which store you find them in.

And I agree don't use denture cleaner on ponies with glitter symbols, twinkle eyes or pearl coating - it can be aggressive stuff and will remove things you dont want it to remove. Magic eraser and a general soap/water scrub is the best bet.

As for replacing the glitter I dont believe its possible to get identical glitter but there are similar products out there. You will probably get the best advice in customs. My way may be too simply :P  You need super fine glitter [which you can get at most craft/hobby stores] and then some kind of glue, mod podge is best. Paint the glue where the symbol should be and then press as much glitter as you can over the area. Use a nail cuticle to shape the glitter. When it is completely dry - and I honestly leave it for 24 hours - I gently brush the excess glitter off with a soft brush.
