Some questions
« on: February 22, 2013, 01:10:16 AM »
1. Want to rehair some Magic Message Windys. Anyone know what colors to go with? Also, any way to 'fix' their symbols?

2. Best place to order hair?

3. Best way to make a helmet for a custom? Medieval style and removable.

Thanks.

I think the helmet would be best made with an air dry clay, since oven  baked stuff kind of shrinks more, so it would be harder to get the fit right. And i always order hair from http://www.dollyhair.com/ but there are other options that I haven't tried so its hard to give an opinion :)

1. I think Windy is....Dusty Rose? for her main color.  Electric Banana is secondary.  I've only seen one artist fix a color change symbol, I believe they used thermal powder?

2.  There are a few hair sites, some of the more reliable are Retrodolls US and My Little Customs in the UK.

3. Probably fabric or light weight clay.  Sculpey is an oven bake clay that is pretty affordable and easy to find.

Hello there CypherRayne - As CSA said above it can be done but it is a pain to redo their symbols. I redid a windy for a restore contest a while ago.

Here is a link to the one I restored so you can see the after results of her symbol repaint. Pics in top right corner are after I repainted them and then warmed the color change paint.

Paint I used is called thermochromic paint - you can purchase this easily on ebay - I used the green color which when warmed changes to clear. The ones I have come in syringes and you just squeeze out what you need.

Thanks for the help everyone.

For the helmet, what if I sculpted it onto a bait's head and baked it while still on the head. Would that keep it from shrinking too much?

If it did shrink you might not be able to get it off the pony without it cracking.

What gen are you doing? You could use a g4 helmet from the twilight sparkle motorcycle single. Or Several of the g3s have helmets you could use as a base and sculpt/modify over to ensure a good fit. Bet you could get them pretty cheap. G1 boys have hats helmets you could mod.

I am currently modding a g4 helmet and its a little bit more bulky than a strictly hand made one but the fit is spot on.

I found this stuff at the craft store.  Lovely feel to it.  So far I have made worms for a zombie and filled in some BBEs. Popped the head into some dry rice to dry it faster.  :)

The helmet is for a g3 fakie, but the specs are almost identical to an actual g3. It's the same custom I was asking about the burn scars for if you remember Sarahlacewing.

I hope so. This will be the first full size custom I've done and no matter how he turns out I will love him ^^ I do need to find a big brother though at some point. I need a mold of their leg feathers to make it a little more obvious he is a he.

I could probably make that mold for you depending on your specific needs. I have a few daddy's, but you might have a little trouble going from g1 boy to g3. I've never tried so I'm not 100% sure how well they take.

I found a how-to for it in one of the links on the tutorial sticky. It seems fairly simple, but we'll see how that works out for me. And the would be great if you could for me.
