How to roll sheepskin at the edges?
« on: February 21, 2013, 12:55:10 PM »
There are so many talented people here that I am sure somebody must have an idea on this. :)

Daffy has a training roller - I guess like a belt but for a horse (and it serves a different purpose than keeping trousers up ;)) - and I am making sheepskin pads for part of it. I have the sheepskin and it's hide backed. I want to turn the edges back on themselves (this is commonly done for equestrian products) to give a nice finish but I want to try and do it professionally if I can! Unfortunately I couldn't buy exactly what I wanted so I'm making it from scratch.

This is an example of what I mean:

The top portion where you can see the fleece on top is rolled, and the lower half is not.

All input appreciated ^.^

Based on your description, the only thing I could think of would be to fold the skin over the edge, then fold a bit under and top stitch it along that edge. I want to say kind of like a French seam, but with only one piece of material, but I'm not sure that is correct. Now I think I've confused myself . . .  Sorry this isn't more helpful.

What LeighAnnApanites said sounds right to me. Fold it over and under and then stitch it. Other than that, I have no clue.

Thanks peeps, I'll look at what a French seam is.

I used to have a sheepskin/hide numnah with the rolled edges and from memory there was a line of stitching on the sheepskin side so I think that bit at least is unavoidable. :)

I have no idea what its called but what the others described is what I would do.  Id also try to hide the stitches inside the seam, too, if possible :)
