My 1st custom, and definately not my last!!
« on: February 18, 2013, 05:24:08 PM »
So I decided to make my sister'sbirthday present this year and wanted to make a McPony into her labrador retriever Yzerman. I think it turned out pretty well for a first go! As you'll probably notice, I changed the ears about halfway through because they just didn't look quite right and I'm glad I did. I used Michael's brand Sculpy stuff for all the non pony parts and regular acrylics to paint.  Thanks everyone for your tips and suggestions!

Wow!  So cool!  You could just do McPets based on peoples critters and be a busy bee.  :)

I was totally thinking that! McPony Pets Customs is now open for business!! Problem is I'll have to figure out how to make a pony into a cat or budgie! Lol!

Very cute, you have a few finish issues but that is something a little practice will take care of.  The biggest is you need to feather your edges more so that they are more seamless. Love the name on the collar, nice touch.

Thanks for the critique, I appreciate it a lot. I think the cheaper Sculpy was the problem for the feathering. I tried as hard as I could, used water with my finger to smooth it out, but it just didn't seem to be enough. I'm going to have to invest in better supplies now that I know I can do it and enjoy it very much. What are your suggestions for fixing the flaws in the future? How do you feather your edges and what do you use to sculpt with? I live in Canada and some things can be a little..well...impossible to find here! Lol as far as the name on the collar, I really think it's the little things that personalize something, especially when it's something like a collar...many people keep that after their pet passes, so I think it's important.

i've found some good air dry clay at micheals, but haven't used them on ponies yet.

how much you think you might charge?

I don't know...I don't think I'd go too much, I mean, I am just starting out, but I'd love to do someone's husky or shi-tzu, something hairy anyway. I could just pull a pic to practice on off the 'net, but I'd rather something with feelings behind it...something really special. I'm also sculpting some of Yzerman's favourite toys, so...I dunno. I guess it would depend on how much work went into each item. Maybe do them for trades at first. I'd certainly love to do it, anyway! I'm loving this! Lol

Wow! Thank you! I've never sculpted anything before except some apples for the Applejack's Sweet Apple barm playset I did (that was my first foray into customizing pony stuff...just painting, really) and I REALLY enjoy it! I think I'm going to stick to doing McPonies...they're nice and dense and I think they may stand up to carving better (like for long legged dogs or stubbys like bulldogs) it's gonna be FUN!!

Lol! I didn't expect this! I'd love to try both, actually! Just pm me, I'll give you my email and we'll go from there. Now I'm definately going to have to invest in the best materials! I hope my sister doesn't mind getting one that I'll probably be embarrassed of in 6 months!
