Should I De-Tinsel? (I Should and Did)
« on: February 15, 2013, 10:29:27 AM »
I have a playful pony sized Luna whom I've been debating over de-tinseling for a while now, but I want to see what you guys think before I go through with it. I could TRY to straighten it, but I don't have a flat iron yet so I doubt it would go over very well. While I'm not planning on selling her any time soon, I really don't want to ruin her or devalue her if I can avoid it. Here's some pics of what I'm up against:

She came like this pretty much out of the box, the only thing I did to her was wet her hair down and run a comb through it. Clear tinsel sure is fussy. What do you guys think? Should I de-tinsel or attempt to straighten?

Iridescent tinsel like that does not respond well to heat, it tends to frizz, crumple and curl at the slightest provocation.  Metallic tinsel can be heat straightened, but that clear stuff is just a terror.  I'd say pull it if it bothers you, or tame it down with some ribbons and such.

Really? Yikes, good thing I don't have a straightening iron. I'll be sure not to bring clear tinsel anywhere near heat in the future--wouldn't want a melty-headed pony. I'm going to go ahead and pluck it out since not much more can be done with it as is. Thank you for the advice!

Edit: There, done! I think she looks way better now.

And here's the tinsel that came out of her. Looks like my cat had a very fabulous hairball.

Thanks guys! I think, since Luna turned out, I'll put Starbeam Twinkle on the de-tinseling block some day soon. Then my shelf will be rid of those pesky tinselheads for good. Well, for now at least.

I definitely prefer her without the tinsel too! Did you cut it or pull it out somehow? (I've got some I'd like to de-tinsel).

I pulled each strand of tinsel straight and cut it veeeeery close to her head with a small exacto blade. It's kind of tricky since some of the tinsel is in the middle of the plugs, but if you're careful you should be able to trim it nice and close with minimal mane loss. :bigups:

Fabulous hairball... *snerk*

That phrase is going to be ricocheting around my brain for a while. ^.^

Great job on the de-tinseling, btw - I have a G3 Waterfire that will probably get similar treatment one of these days.  Thanks for the post, and the how-to!

Good call on detinseling her. I did the same thing with my "princess" pose Luna, especially since her tail already didn't have any in it o:

I like tinsel, sometimes, but honestly she looks much better without it. Once that stuff goes crazy it's time to get rid of it.
