Re-rooting tool?!
« on: February 02, 2013, 03:09:25 PM »
Hi everyone!

I´m new in the customs section and I´m dreaming about making my own costums some day. Not even close yet, but you gotta start somewhere, right?
So I´m thinking about giving some of my ponies new life by giving them new hair, but I just can´t seem to find anyone who is selling good rerooting tools. The only thing I have found so far is some needles, but I want the real tools. The one where you just press the hair right in and then you glue it.
So can someone tell me where to turn to?

I use a 4 way exacto knife that I got at harbor freight.
My needles are hand cut with dikes and filed smooth.
It's nice because of the soft grip but that slides around.

I made my own rerooting tool with a champagne cork and a needle :) The needle was cut and sanded a bit to get rid of rough edges.

Yes, sometimes the needle slides too far into the cork, so it's not perfect, but I chose to do this to see if I could work with a tool (I used the needle and floss method before) and it works well enough for my to just replace the needle when I have to :)

Check out Amazon and spend $5 on a duel-ended pin vise, and make your own.  Cut the eye on a size 24 embroidery needle and stick it in one side of the tool, and use a size 22 needle in the other end if you like to widen the plug holes before pushing the hair through.  The vice come with 2 collets that each can be flipped and give you 4 different sizes to work with.

No problem.  I've been using the same rig for nearly a year now after looking at the one Dollyhair sells and figuring out what the tool was.  I couldn't see spending the money for something I could make myself at a third of the price, especially factoring in the cost of needles.
