Puzzled by Baby Cotton Candy
« on: February 01, 2013, 03:46:59 PM »
I've never had a duplicate of a same pony before, so I'm quite confused by these two. Is the other one just yellowed? The plug placement on their manes are different too, the pinker one has more plugs on the forehead and the second plug row has fewer plugs than the peachier one. So what's up with them? Different batch at the factory?

What is written on the hooves?

If one has no pat. pend. it would be the German release. Otherwise I'd say discolouring.

I love their cute little faces in the last photo.

I say the more yellow color one is due to age, and the more pink one might have a factory error plugs? It does look like it comes too far down but I don't have one to really look at irl :(

Yeah, I'd say the one has just discolored over time. As for the plugs - I think that's generally just a slight factory "issue". I've seen plenty of ponies whose mane started too low or too high. From your second photo, it almost looks like the more pink one's plugs are spaced out wider than on the discolored one?

The darker one just looks yellowed. I've sunfaded pink ponies like that, and it generally brightens them up nicely. Unless she's sun-burnt instead. As for the hair, as has already been said, there's some variation in where the hair starts. I've heard it's probably related to exactly how the pony was positioned in the machine that inserted the mane.

Discoloration on the lefthand one.  Hair placement can actually vary quite a bit on the same pony.  :)

With so many of the early G1s its possible to find some in a wide range of shades - thousands and thousands and thousands of the same pony produced in multiple batches at different times in 1980s Hong Kong factories for as cheap a price as possible and each of them being subject to different conditions for over 30 years. The odds on them all being the same without differences is practically impossible.

I agree with others that the pony on the left looks yellowed over time - she is still very cute though :)

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but this reminded me of my Flutter Pony Yum Yums. I noticed that they are two different sizes. One is taller than the other. Is that common too?

It might be the difference between the big-head flutter pony molds and the small-head flutter pony molds.  Can you take a picture of them from the side?

Yep it's something that occurs when you use a mold to cast the toys.  :)  After time the mold changes and so do the toys made with it.  The factory eventually replaces the mold with a new one but think of it like car brakes - the more you use, the more they wear...

Thank you all for your great (again) answers! They're both cute of course, I was just surprised by how pink the newer pony I got is! I've always thought that the peachier color is the right one.  Haven't seen a non-yellowed before I see.
