*cries* my perfect pinwheel has REGRIND!!!!!!! Help!!!
« on: January 24, 2013, 05:56:51 AM »
Pics to come, I literally just noticed and I'm so upset....she was completely mint and a gift from clones_rebellion a while back

Can regrind start because of the condition the ponies are in? My room sometimes gets a bit damp but its ok on the whole. Or does regrind happen just because of the plastic anyway ? I might have to put all my ponies away in air tight boxes if it helps :yikes:

Oh! No!! Poor thing... So sorry... I don't know why regrind starts, I think it's more of the plastic than of the condition the ponies are in... maybe keep it away from sunlight and heat just in case?

I am fairly sure there's nothing that can be done about regrind, specifically the plastic-fading or losing pigmentation. It's possibly due to a loss of plasticizer from those parts of her first, due to older batch plastic, and therefore an airtight box/bag display may help.

I'm not too much use here, as regrind is not a type of mould it's not something I view as spoiling the pony, she's just getting old.

Aww, boo... But I'm afraid that's inevitable, plastics just don't age well. Personally I'd rather have my ponies on display, with age marks and all, than to keep them locked away where I can't enjoy them. I try to look at it as the pony gaining life experience and personality. Of course I'm not the pickiest collector to begin with... :/

Excess moisture while it may, or may not accelerate/trigger regrind specifically, it can cause hosts of other issues. I have a dehumidifier beside what remains of my pony collection at my parents house. The ponies are well off the floor, in boxes on top of tables. Their basement is fully finished and feels dry, yet that sucker does get full of water quickly. My baby brother kindly tends to it for me as I'm a 5 hour flight away. Dehumidifiers can run about $300 new, but I've seen people selling them used on FB swap groups for around $100. I'll likely be picking up one for this house sometime this year as we're in mild and rainy BC. Ontario was worse though, the humidity in the summer is awful. :) Maybe another possibility to consider, so you can still enjoy and display your collection? But of course perhaps she would've gotten some regrind regardless..... finicky ponies..

I think ventilation is better than an air-tight box. If the plastci breaks down its going to release chemicals and you want them to be able to dissipate and not sit around the ponies.

Thankyou for all your helpful replies  I guess it's not my fault that she got the regrind then, that at least makes me feel better. I am now wanting to do a bit of a clean up mission though, juist to see if any other ponies have developed anything else horrid :yikes:

Oh no honey! I had this happen with my Steamer recently - its so upsetting!

I agree with FantasticFirefly, there is nothing you can actually do to stop plastic breaking down - no matter what it is going to happen but sometimes, perhaps, humid conditions or allowing surface dirt to built up can trigger or accelerate it. Either way the break down would happen anyway.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

I have no tips but I am really sorry. :(   Pinwheel is an awesome pony. Mine doesn't have regrind, but I wouldn't be surprised if she developed it. It seems to be a curse on ponies her color.

That's terrible :( Regrind seems to be so common in pink ponies. I would not lock them up for fear of them getting regrind or anything. Ponies are made to be enjoyed and you can't enjoy them locked away :)

I wonder if its just going to be a matter of time before ALL G1 ponies start showing signs of regrind?  It will be interesting to see what happens another 5...10....15.....20 years down the line.

Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't regrind one of those things that will very (VERY) slowly affect the whole pony? Like an orange pony might get a pink spot, but eventually the whole pony will be pink? But then I don't know if that would be better or not.
I'll put something here some time

Sorry.

Yeah, my childhood ponies have been in storage at my parent's house for the last ten years.  I miss them and am looking forward to unpacking them someday when I get my own house and space for a pony room. But I worry about what condition I'll find them in when I do.  My parents' basement is quite dry, but you never know.

Pleeeeeaaaase, no regrind on my Mimic!  *hopes*
Nirvana grails:  Reverse Gusty (upgrade), Peru Windy and Moonstone (upgrade), Brazil TAF upgrades, Argie Powder w/ white hair (upgrade), French Windy and Moondancer (upgrades), Spain TAF's, TE's, and piggies.  These are my biggest wants, but I'm looking for tons more nirvanas, especially Greeks, Brazilians, and Peruvians.  Feel free to PM me for sales or trades.  But please note that I'm also fairly picky.
