Marimo balls! Anyone have any???
« on: January 18, 2013, 09:57:55 PM »
First off, sorry for starting so many topics in here lol today's my day off and i have literally nothing to do but surf the web today. XD

I was looking up pet plant keychains, because i remembered seeing some really cute cacti on think geek, and looked on ebay and found an adorable little plant you grow inside a keychain, a bonsai plant. then i stumbled upon a marimo ball auction, and curiosity got the best of me and i peeked. i had heard of them before, but never actually knew what they were other than a plant. so i looked, read and fell in love instantly. then i looked up some youtube videos, saw all the adorable little jars and tanks of them, and before i could even blink i had bought 3 marimo balls. does anyone have any tips, ideas, or tanks of their own? these things are just too cute. i'm definitely buying more next pay check >_> also plan on giving them as valentine's day gifts to everyone at work.

Alot of my "fishie" friends have them in their tanks. They are pretty neat. All you have to do for them is give them light and turn them every now and then so the part on the bottom dosen't turn brown.

They come in different sizes too - the standard golfball size and the mini ones that are very small.

1. They can survive in warmer tanks, but prefer cooler water, but in the long run they don't care
2. Give them a "bath" in tank water when you do your water changes, squeeze them while they are above water, then dunk them under and squeeze again to make sure they retain enough water to sink.
3. Roll/rotate them sometimes so the underside doesn't go brown.

Tanks of my own? *looks around room*
I have 7.  :) I loves my fishies

I beleive it's actually some kind of algae. I dont know how, but my sister has managed to gorw the same stuff all over the decor in her tank (which is probably not a good thing since she never changes the water and a 20G is way to small for 2 goldfish anyways).

I have three of them in my tanks and I love them too!  Another favourite of mine are these plants that look like a bunch of bananas that eventually root in your tank.

I don't have any marimo balls yet >o< Where did you guys get yours?
Although, in the spring - fall I like to go in the woods and collect moss :) I take care of it and grow it in my room (in cookie sheets full of dirt n__n) Maybe I'm a little weird but it smells good and I like having 'pet plants'

I found these critters on Etsy in what look to be sealed bottles.  Can they survive like that?  I think they would make a cute pet for the kidlet, but in an open container the kitties would have too much fun.

My boyfriend is a plant enthusiast too and our apartment is filled with plants.  We get our marimo balls at the local pet store here!  Hope that helps!

On Amazon it says they are only good for so many months. Is that true?

They grow very slowly, so I would thin they can live a long time - as long as they have light and they get rotated every now and then.
You can get them from petshops like petsmart but I never seen them at petco - they have ones that float but its not the same thing. I thin the floating ones are java moss rolled into a ball. Ebay also has a lot
