TE Ponies - Rubbing on eyes or gem variations?
« on: January 14, 2013, 11:58:11 AM »
Hi all, so I just recently had a chance to compare some of my TE ponies to new ones that I got (in hopes to upgrade them) - and when I was looking at them side by side I noticed that some looked to have much lighter, clearer gems in their eyes... but that the TE ponies with darker eyes had more iridescence on the gems themselves...

So I assume this is just rubbing? Like the ones that seem lighter or a different color are just worn off more?

I took a few pictures:

Different angles - it's not just the camera flash, as you can clearly see the difference in real life also...

I first noticed in on Galaxy, but it really didn't show up in the photos as well as it does in real life when you're just looking at them:

The one in back, or behind - is the lighter one. It's like rose petal pink in the normal light. The one in front is not nearly as pink, more purple-y and much darker in real life.

So, if this is just rubbing, I assume the "darker" one, with more irridescense is less rubbed and therefore in better condition... but are there any variations of the gems used in the TEs?

The iridescent coating does rub off over time, but the gems are also prone to fading in the sun (which is what that first picture looks like to me). I would assume there's also just some normal variation from the factory, but I don't know much about that.

I would guess fading, although it is a very striking look!

I definitely could also see sun fading - but the ponies themselves are quite similar in overall body color, like I don't notice either of the Galaxy's being lighter or more faded, hair or body-wise, versus the gems. In Sweet Stuff, there's a body difference but the top one hasn't been cleaned in probably 12 years (sitting in storage), so she's dingy, which may lead to her looking like a different body color... I would have to clean her up to be 100% on that. It was really odd about Galaxy because her eyes are certainly quite different in real life - and I think the color difference plays with my eyes and makes me think the gems are slightly different as well, but, again, I think that's an optical illusion. I just wondered if anyone had any knowledge of this kind of variation in the gems... I still think I'm over-thinking it and it's just rubbing or fading but, very different colors IRL.

Yeah, it's hard to tell from the photos, but I do think the left Galaxy lost her iridescent coating...I can see some green-colored highlight on the eye of the right one in the bottom photo, and that's not on the left. As for Sweet Stuff, the one with the lighter eyes does appear to have lighter blush; beyond that though, I don't think the body or hair fades and as quickly as the eyes, so that could explain why they otherwise look the same.

But I agree, I'd like to know how much original variance there is in TE gems; it's not something I've thought much about.

I too have variations in the eye gems for some of my TEs, I just put it down to factory variances, would love to hear some other peoples take on it though :)

Well I know as a child that I believe my friend had a TE pony and we were always touching those sparkly eyes - so I can certainly see that happening. I just never really had noticed before how much iridescence there was on the eyes! Guess most of mine are probably more on the rubbed side, but I can't lie, it almost seems like the gems that are more rubbed (the ones I refer to as being "lighter) reflect the sun in a much brighter way... :) I would really like to sell my extra Sweet Stuff and Galaxy but I don't know which one I like best to keep, lol...

I'm curious about this as well, I have a Fizzy that has pink eyes and one that eyes that almost look pale green.

Fizzy as far as I know does have two confirmed gem colours. One is pink and the other is green. So you might not be imagining things.

I think the Galaxy is probably just a time, fade, coating thing. But Sweet Stuff's does look like a completely different colour.

Its unusual but likewise I have seen several TEs with incorrect coloured eye gems over the years - someone even has a Sweet Stuff with green eye gems. Big factory, little tiny gems, 6 different TE ponies I cant say I am too surprised some ponies got the wrong ones.

Congrats on having her in your collection :)

I know that in the Spanish TE's there are variants with different gem colors.
Gingerbread, for instance, has purple and blue eyes. I have the purple one:

And blue eyes from the nirvana gallery:

I used to have two HK Gingerbreads with different eye color and eyeliner color too. ne had black and another brown.

Also I remember some time ago someone posted a green eye Fizzy.
