Non Pony Related Scam

Hi everybody. I don't know if this is the right place to post this. I just thought I should let people know what's going on with a new scam.

It affects people with UK land line phones. Someone is calling people at home and claiming to be from BT and demanding a credit card payment over the phone for an unpaid bill. They are telling people to hang up and try to phone someone and they will disconnect the phone line to prevent it, as proof they are from BT. They then call back and demand the payment.

People are falling for this because they don't understand the technical bit. The person on the other line only has to put their phone on mute and then they can hear the other person but the person can't hear the caller. The caller can then disconnect and call back. This is because the person who initiated the call is the one who can disconnect it. Not everybody knows this so people out there are falling for it.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this but I felt the need to warn people.

Yikes!  I am sure our UK peeps will be glad to be informed of this scam.

But it simply amazes me the time and effort scam artist's go through. Wouldn't it be easier to get a job?

Seems nothing new...kinda like how my grandma gets scam phone calls and everyone else in the USA

But it's good to let the others know. NEVER GIVE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION VIA PHONE! Don't care if it is Obama

Maybe it's not new. It actually sounds kinda obvious when you think about it and I wouldn't have posted but there are people out there falling for it.
