Paint pens actually work for me. So happy!!

Okay, so a while ago I ask people opinions on paint pens and whether they're worth buying or not.

Topic:
http://mlparena.com/mlp/index.php/topic,310932.msg443725.html#msg443725

as you can see, people aren't too fond of them. Well I decided to try and take a gamble today, because I seem to do the oposite from what people tell me. Lol :silly: Well, it seems to have paid off for me, I bought a paint pen from a craft store today. I paid $11 for an extra fine one, and it paid off. I'm going to still need practice, I am pretty new at this, but here's some pics of what I've done.

I was just really mucking around with these ponies and not doing anything real serious, but constructive critisim would be good. Do they look okay to you, or does the pen make them look tacky? The pink pony is a bit shiney because my fiance sprayed a base coat on her. The paint pen dries fast and isn't sticky at all. Let me know what you think. So far, i'm very happy. Now I just need to test my airbrush. ^_^

Not too fond of the eye but that might be because it needs some more details?
I love the symbols you did though! Pair pens give a nice smooth result :)
I remember using some to get smooth regular lines an it worked just as we'll as for you. Don't forget to seal your work though as this paint is VERY sensitive to scratches!

Yeah I only have one colour and it's my first time doing the eyes, I'm wanting to try the other side with a black pen. I have a question with symbols. If I draw the image on tracing paper and press the paper on the pony and colour on the paper, should the image slightly appear on the pony??

Very nice!  I'm not sure about the transferring with tracing paper.  It *could* work, but with the paint pens being sort of thick lined, I could see it smudging or blobbing pretty quickly.  Just a thought.  Good for you for trying new materials!  It's good not to be too set in our artist ways.

Oh, I meant with pencil that way it leaves a bit of an outline and I can draw of it properly with pen. Anyway I'll try it, ya never know. Thanks for the compliment. ^.^

I did it once but I was on a light colored G3 and I had to use a 2B pencil.
Even if you have trouble with transfer paper, 2B pencils can help as it can leave light trace on G3 bodies. I specify G3 as I haven't tried on G4 and their body plastic is very different.

ETA: 2b pencil will slightly color your paint so avoid using light colors over it (especially white)

Just an idea- why not use a chalk pastel pencil in a similar colour to lightly draw on your design before painting?  They should also wipe off of sealed paint fairly easily too.

On the subject of paint pens, something odd I found while doing my last custom was that on the first coat of white, it was sticky. I almost wiped it off with acetone, don't know what possessed me to go over it again with more white, but after the second coat it was no longer sticky at all! *shrug* None of the other paint pens I've worked with have been sticky, ever. So there you go. xD

You could also use graphite paper but it's a bit of a mess if you aren't used to using it. Plus it's dark so the lines wouldnt be suitable for lighter colors to go over it.
I'm not really on here anymore. Email me if you need my for something.
