Any flocking experts? Looking to commission a So Soft....
« on: December 20, 2012, 08:47:32 PM »
I've never commissioned a custom before because when I get an idea, I usually just do it myself. However, this time what I want is a custom So-Soft Moon Dancer and I don't know how to do flocking nor do I have the desire to learn atm. So if there is anyone out there who is good at flocking and has a commission slot open, give me a shout! I'm in no hurry, so starting after the holidays is fine.

I keep forgetting to look there!  It comes in colors, this could be bad.  Does it stick well?

Usually custom SS ponies will be made with stuff like "Fun Flock". You have to glue it in the surface with spray glue i.e.
This material gives the surface a velvet touch but to my knowledge currently there's nothing available that will reproduce the real SS pony fur, which is as washable and as durable as the real thing.

With strong enough glue, you might be able to get that same washable effect. I actually flocked my RE pony for the Halloween swap using the Enhanced Mini Flocker Kit from Donjer which provides Two (2) 8 oz cans of color-matched undercoat adhesive. That stuff takes a while to cure, but it holds strong! This stuff is made to use on outdoor stuff, vehicles, duck decoys, woodcrafting projects, etc..so I'm sure it could hold up to a good bit of water. I'm not 100% sure though.

It's very hard to simulate real flocking which is done in a vacuum at the factory I believe. It makes the hairs stick up on end. There's a way to do it (I learned from reflocking old GI joe heads) that involved electricity, but I have never attempted it on something big :/ I know what had a customizer here a long time ago that was SUPER good at it, but I don't remember the name!!

Rowdy_cowgirl is amazing at flocking!  She had a demo at the 2010 Pony Fair.  She uses modge podge, glue, and a lot of finesse for beautiful effects.

I don't remember seeing Rowdy_cowgirl here, I'll have to check into it. Anyone know who did those awesome SS G4s that were at this year's MLP Fair?

i've made ag3 and g4 ss truly.my method was watering down a bit of tacky glue and brushing it on the body little by little and pouring enough flock to cover the glue area before brushing off the loose flock off. it does take a while to do, but if done right it will be worth it. i happen to have a mcd ss pony made from rowdy cowgirl. she is amazing.

Ah yes, electrostatic would be a better method and I was tempted to get the kit for it, but it's rather expensive and I wasn't sure how well the pony's plastic would hold up to that method.
