Winter storm Draco
« on: December 20, 2012, 10:24:33 AM »
Woo blizzard warning!  We haven't gotten much snow but they're saying anywhere for 4-8 inches by 7 pm tonight, high winds, drifting, low visibility, etc etc.  At least we may have a white Christmas!  I'd be much more excited if I didn't have to work today and could just curl up on the couch with hot cocoa, but oh well. Anyone else getting hit by this?

BTW, when the heck did they start naming winter storms?!  :what:

I think they started naming them this year but we don't and haven't had any snow here so probably no white Christmas here.

Yeah they started naming snow storms this year like Starswirl said. I'm very aprehensive about the high winds and other unpleasant weather Draco will be bringing here x.o I also hope nothing happens to jeopardize the trip to see my family whom I haven't seen since May.

A tiny streak of storm just passed through here and the momentary burst of high winds probably did a far bit of damage. My building at work, which is a storm safe area, just had both sets of doors (one set of iouter doors and one inner) blow open, which was a bit of a schock. And a giant metal pole of a concrete base fell over right outside - if it were a foot longer it would have hit my building. Fun!

They started naming winter storms? Seriously?

Theres something thats going to push into our area tomarrow and into saturday..but I wouldnt concider it a storm.  Im more concerned that the warm temperatures and rain dropping below freezingis going to cause 1 big icerink by the end of it all.

According to the Weather Channel naming winter storms like hurricanes is for public awareness. People react to and prepare for named storms statistically more than unnamed storms. Personification equals safety apparently.

Was this storm named by a fan of Slytherin?  Nah, j/k.  But seriously, we haven't gotten any snow yet in this part of Michigan, just rain and a lot of wind.  There have been a few flakes on and off, but nothing heavy and it doesn't stick and stops quickly.  The lights have been flickering for the past 1/2 hour or so, so I hope we don't lose power.

we are supposed to get hit Friday night  through Saturday morning here in NY state. It is a very good thing I will not need to go anywhere at all this weekend and I hope we do get snow.

I've been having crazy winds since this morning and they've gotten worse. It's not quite cold enough yet to snow, BUT apparently it supposed to start in a half an hour.

In the past 24 hours we had 1.25" of rain, some sleet and freezing rain, and around 4" of snow with 50+ mph winds!  It sounds like the wind is trying to blow our windows in!

Silly storm made a damper on my holiday travels. NW Iowa is where I live. Maybe 2 inches or 4 but just the winds caused issues but once you hit our capital or even sooner it was worse. Roads closed and everything. I was to be in South East Iowa Thursday but it looks like we wont travel until Friday:P

I think it comes down to the fact that we wanted to seam cool like all the hurricanes getting a name why not our snow storms:)

Well, we officially got our first snow since March. Unfortunately, it's just a dusting that doesn't even cover the grass. The winds finally died down, but it was pretty windy earlier. Our power did go out, but only for a few seconds, before coming back on. Though, it was long enough to knock the guides out on our cable boxes and interrupt a recording on one of our DVRs.
