Nutcrackers... new obsession.
« on: November 26, 2012, 04:40:29 PM »
I work at dollar general (always how my conversation with my doctor starts lol!!) and we got in these giant 42" nutcracker guys. one broke, we marked it half priced, and my grandma bought it. and i got jealous. so i had to get one of my own. out of pure luck (i swear i didn't do it) another one broke and it got halfed. i bought him that day, and then ANOTHER broke, i bought him that day too so i had one of each. then i started buying one of every one we had, buying from other stores too. long story short, in 1 week i accumulated 20 nutcrackers. >_O HOW?! does anyone else collect these adorable things? i wanna see!! :D

WOW 20! I love nutcrackers too :) Two years in a row I managed to win one at our work Christmas Party, and then last year I found a hockey-playing nutcracker, just a 12inch I think one to add to the collection. This year we have a mini for our tree! I don't know what it is about them, they're just so cute and fancy all at once!

Last week I visited a thrift store and among my purchases were two marvelous 3-inch suncatchers with pictures based on the Nutcracker story and they're marked with year 1986. One suncatcher has Claire holding the nutcracker next to a decorated tree and a display case holding toy soldiers. The other suncatcher has the nutcracker backed by his fellow soldiers as he faces off against the mouse king with his mice followers. I love 'em. I was only a year old when these came out.

They are my mom's obsession and collection. She's got them for years and years, and I know they are reaching far past probably the 200 or 300 mark? I don't know afraid to count them. My dad had a college buddy that would visit once or twice a year and duck hunt with him. he would sleep on the couch till years ago they started booting me to sleep on the couch and he in my bed. Later I learned he finally told my parents he could not sleep at night with all those demon nutcracker eyes watching him.

I like them a lot too, we only have one, but it's already from my mum's childhood, therefore pretty special to us.
Last year I wanted to buy a nice one from Germany to take back to China as a present for a friend ... it's impossible nowadays to find wooden nutcrackers that are NOT made in China.
Do you have pics?

My mom has collected nutcrackers for years. She says that someday my brother and I will be able to pick the ones we want.

My husband has a pretty extensive nutcracker collection.  A few less than before thanks to our crazy cats.  >_<  I will try to get some pictures later if I think of it.   :)
