I...just...can't believe it.  She bought an Ipad that was a MIRROR. For $200 at a gas station.

That's pretty sick, and I certainly hope they catch the guy who did it and get her money back somehow...buuuut I have to say, that woman really wasn't using her brain. Obviously I don't know how the guy presented the 'ipad' to her - must have been at least a little bit convincing -  but geeze, you'd think most people would examine what they're buying before handing over $200 to some random guy in a truck!

even if she opened it to try it out (which she indeed should have done...) before actually handing the money over, that price should have made her think something like this - I know it would have made me think of this. I love to find stuff for bargain prices, but dang, not with the possibility of them being stolen as the reason for their super low price

u__u; You can't buy things second hand without LOOKING inside the package! People do that all the time with craigslist and put bricks inside of packages. Or even worse, when there is a deal too good to be true, it's likely that the item is stolen....

That is called the pig in the poke scam, its been around for as long as people have been trading things.  If you were an honest person in the first place, you wouldn't fall for it.  beacause like Kaos said, you obviously aren't thinking its legit if someone approaches you like that.

really? I mean the first thing that would jump out at me is it's stolen! We had a guy cruising around our shopping centre in a van once selling tv's... we asked for their card sarcastically, (they're thieves, of course they don't have one, but if they did it would make them easier to track) and called the cops. 99% chance it's stolen... or you'd at least have a place of business!

That may be true, but it is who the scam artists are targeting.  They hope to find someone who is willing to risk buying something that is most likely stolen, so they don't call the police. 

I have a friend who basically has made a career out of teaching people about scam artists.  He literally goes out to be scammed so he can learn what people are doing.  He once paid a woman $100 for a counterfeit 20pound note when he was in Scotland, just because he HAD to have it.

I believe in the good and honesty of everybody, but I also have the foresight to not expect something very high-end to be available so cheap and in a gas station parking lot.
