Thanks everyone for the great advice. I really appreciate it, I have a lot to think about, but I'll be sure to check out Shapeways for a couple of personal models

And yes, Maniah is right. Unfortunately, my local companies won't even print a picture cake with an animated character that I myself have created, just in case it's copyrighted somewhere, which makes me sad

My boyfriend is probably going to buy the latest makerbot some time in December. If we should indeed get one, I can come back here and tell you more about my experience. :>
I can recommend shapeways, tho. We've ordered from them before, and it always looked fine. It can be a bit of work to make the model fit for their requirements, tho. And: Ask to have it sanded/polished by THEM for just one or two dollars extra. It saves you an INSANE amount of work. xD
