Storing vintage boxes??
« on: November 04, 2012, 01:20:11 AM »
I have a few boxes from old playsets (mlp, keypers) and I dont have room for them in my apartment now that I got so many ponies xD
I would like to store them in my attic, but I really wan to keep them safe for damage.

Is there anything I should think about?

How do you store yours??

Thankful for answers :)

I would think either shelves or nail to the wall and hang from there..
Though I think most people protect their collection from sunlight that makes them darker.

many use their closets

I would use a plastic bin , the ones that come in many sizes , sold at the home depot :) , i got the idea from this friend who went overseas for service for a couple of years and all his things were neatly stored on these type of bins , i was amazed of how well the stuff was preserved ,i helped him unpack and all was in great shape , albums of pictures and documents , clothes and you name it :)

Are you storing them packed flat I take it?

The first thing is to make sure any tape is folded over on to the plain cardboard side of the box so that it doesn't over time stain the actual artwork side. I have each box wrapped in acid free white tissue paper and they are all stacked side by side in a large box. There are also a couple of silica gel packs in with them to make sure they don't risk becoming damp. Also stack them up right, side by side not lying on top of one another and make sure they are not squished together just in case the ink leaks through the tissue and on to another box.

Also I would advise you keep them perhaps in a cupboard or somewhere you can keep an eye on - large stacks of cardboard can attract little wandering wildlife who like to nibble!

I think wrapping them in tissue and storing in a plastic tub would be a great way to preserve them :)

Regular tissue paper is acidic and will yellow over time and can stain whatever it is storing. Non acidic tissue paper is more expensive but it will be labelled as such and you should be able to pick it up at a hobby or craft or camera store as its used for scrapbooking and photograph storage. You can even get it on amazon.

Try ebay for acid free tissue paper and silica gel packets - you can buy a large amount for good prices
