Advice Needed: Teen Trends dolls
« on: October 30, 2012, 08:12:22 PM »
Does anybody know anything about these dolls? I need some advice. I got these girls when I was younger, and they've pretty much been sitting in my closet for the past five or six years.

I took them out a few days ago, and I noticed that their arms and legs are very, VERY sticky/slimy. They feel greasy to the touch, and my hands actually feel slimy after handling them.

I think it's some sort of plasticizer breakdown, as opposed to something having gotten on them. Any advice on how to clean it? Can I stop it from happening? Will they eventually melt into a puddle of goo?

I also need some advice on taming their hair. Two of them seem to have a blend of hair types; one type's the regular "fluffy" Barbie-type hair (kanekalon, I think?) and the other is this weird, somewhat stiff, almost wire-y stuff. I think the wirey stuff's for styling, as both the dolls that have it came with little curling irons, but it's insanely difficult to do anything with.

I think I found one at Savers today? Are they larger than usual, marked "Mattel 2001", and have strung joints?

Mine are all marked Mattel 2004 on both their heads and their backs, but yes, they are larger (about 18", I think) and they do have strung joints.

In case anyone has them, and is having the same stickiness issue I've got, I have an update. I gave one of mine a scrub-down with dish soap, and she doesn't seem to be sticky/greasy anymore. I'll have to wait and see if it happens again over time, though.

I think mine might actually be a HSM doll. They reused the Teen Trends molds for a few larger sized dolls. That might be why mine isn't sticky. Perhaps they used a different plastic. I'm trying to mod the shoulder joints.
