glueing heads.. again..
« on: October 30, 2012, 02:17:43 PM »
I dont know what my problem is..

I never had this problem at all until like a few months ago when I had that problem gluing a white pony head back to its body. It made sense that it was the white plastic because it was harder and less porous.

but i swear every custom iv done since then iv had the same stupid problem. I got the white pony head on with gorilla glue, in the past i always had near instant success with just plain krazy glue.

but now nothing seems to work without a fight! and once again im stuck trying to attach the head onto a custom and nothing, not even gorilla glue is working. Iv tried just holding it together while it dries, setting it aside to let it dry. every time its been set a long time (hours, days) i come back and the head literally just falls off as soon as its moved.

i dont know if im actually loosing my mind over this or not but its really extremely frustrating. iv been having this problem with every custom, at the moment im working on a G1 custom, which i dont usually do so.. if anyone has any better adhesive advice.. please help

Maybe you can set in a couple pins in the neck to help hold it in place? I have to admit that I rarely have this problem. 99% I the time I am able to save the neck plug and don't need to glue.

Hope you solve your problem!

So the krazy glue isn't working? What about regular super glue? Even the gel version?

I've always used Zap-A-Gap for mine. I've had issues with heads not lining up after doing huge peg wings, but never the head not attaching. Maybe try running over the inside of the head and neck seam with a Qtip and acetone? It sounds like some sort of oil/substance is blocking the glue from adhering. Could even be skin oil from re-hairing.

I know it sounds drastic, but 2 part epoxy has always worked for me   I would definitely give them a quick clean in the neck area with acetone though, just like BarbedDragon suggested.  I hope it all works out for you!

If the plastic is too pourous or it's just not sticking, then it doesn't have anything to adhear itself to and "catch."

Personally, I would try sanding the two surfaces with a light sandpaper before gluing. That will make both surfaces a little bit rough and give the glue something to fasten itself to.

Good luck! :D

So many projects!! What do I want to work on? :awake:

ive just been using Tacky craft glue without problems. i agree, cleaning and maybe sanding (or even gently scoreing the edge with an Xacto) might help the glue find something to hold onto.

No, but I think hubby has used it for something plastic.  Will ask him when he wakes up.  Glad you asked this, I have a split in the base of a G1 baby head, a bit worse after re-hairing.  Now plan on acetone and a bit of roughening before the glue.  Would a pin help?  Won't it rip things open when I take it out?

I've tried it, but I'm impatient and don't like waiting forever for heads to dry before I style the hair. E-6000 works better on rigid surfaces, I use it a lot in my jewelry making. It has a tendency to come apart on more flexible objects :/

Did you try sanding the surface yet? I haven't used the E6000 on ponies yet. I use this brush one super glue and it's always worked fine.
