Synthetic hair question! (non pony, crazy wig stuff!)

Okay, so yeah this isn't pony related but face it... who knows more about synthetic hair than pony customizers?

so anyway... I got this sort black wig from walmart, you know, the super cheap halloween wigs that feel like crud and never come in the style you want them in...

anyway, I want to turn this wig into Ash Ketchum's hair style... (yeah I'm a pokemon dork and I plan to be Ash for halloween >.> )

I'm looking for some tips on what might work to get the style to look right... I plan to cut and style the hair as needed to get it to look like ash (link to ash picture: http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_madcmbQ9Bi1qifjgh.png )

and here is the monstrosity that I need to restyle:

My only thoughts were like a ton of styling gel or hair spray to get it to stay... but I'm thinking the hair spray may have an adverse effect on the synthetic hair...

any thoughts?

I don't think it may be more like doll hair, but I know that some dolls have wigs. So.. Maybe they would know how to handle the wig better?

In my experience, the material these types of novelty wigs are made out of is on the cheaper end of synthetic hair. I'd say its comparable to the Dollar Tree type stuff. Basically its probably going to stick straight up when you cut it short and will be hard to style it. I agree with Maniah's suggestion of checking with doll hair folks though, they'd probably know better

i rehaired a G3 glitterbell with a glow in the dark version of this hair. it is very thick but not that hard to style. shoulder length hair on a G3 is a little too short for this so i had to use a curling iron.

it pretty much only needs to last one day, I think I'd want to get a better quality wig if I were to do this again, since the quality on this one is very poor

yes, i thought that too.
then i would recommend wallpaper paste, as strange as it sounds. stirr some together and style it, hold it that way until dried.
i tried to sketch it:

cut the wig a bit, then make the area you want to "sculpt" wet-ish with the glue. (don´t worry, you can wash it out everything). you´ll also need a hairdryer.
makes that sense for you? i know, i´m not the best in explaning if its not in RL. ^^"
