Waterproof ponies?
« on: October 13, 2012, 04:41:25 PM »
I need suggestions for sealant for ponies that is nice and waterproof. Like, really waterproof... as in needs to be able to be submerged in water pretty much indefinitely. Under those circumstances, what would you guys use? ^_^

Are you making a Pony themed fish tank? That would be awesome! Would also probably change the sealant so it won't hurt the fish. What is it for?

I can't exactly say what it is for, it's a special secret project. But it will not be around any living thing, so I don't have to worry about toxicity, but it will be underwater long term like a fish tank.

Are you talking like FBR sealing?  Or just the symbols?  I've never dyed a pony before, but I would *think* that a dyed pony would be pretty color-fast under water.  I also don't know what enamel paint would do to a pony body, but I *think* it's at least water resistant.  If you could find the kinds of paints used to paint fish tank decorations, they probably wouldn't even need to be sealed.

enamel paint will destroy the pony and make it forever sticky... saw one that was painted with enamel... not good

You could always try the Ceramcoat polyurethane varnishes. I would suggest doing a test, but since polyurethane is not water based it may work better than an acrylic based sealant or mod podge.

Thanks Zarine, I'll looking into those. The only sealers I use myself are mod podge, dullcote, and triple thick.

I probably will be doing a full seal, as I'm working with McD's/blind bags, so there will be enough painted that I might as well seal the whole thing.

Dullcote and Triple thick are what I used too. Where would you find the Ceramcoat polyurethane varnishes? I don't think I've ever seen them. Scratch that, I remember using a Ceramcoat Varnish before, don't remember which it was but I didn't used it after I read the warning stuff, plus after not using it for some odd months it was no good (is solidified in the bottle and there wasn't anything I could do about it so I had to throw it out x.x) What about the Latex Varnishes? I looked into those and despite the dry time it says they are waterproof

I know hardware stores carry varnish for waterproofing outside furnitures. There may be one for plastics. I would check out a Home Depot or lowes and see what they have and if it will work with vinyl.

There is outdoor modpodge, but I'm not sure how waterproof it is...
