Ewww moth balls!
« on: October 12, 2012, 02:41:49 PM »
So I just received an absolutely minty Nibbles and Dibbles with their bassinet from ebay....but they REEK of moth balls >_<  I guess they came out of storage or someone's attic.  Any tips on getting rid of the smell?

I have the same problem with a pony I found at the thrift store.  I've had her in a container with baking soda for several weeks now, and she still reeks.  I'm thinking of trying cat litter next, but I'm not sure if there's something that might work better.

Mint gum! i once had a Mint Dreams that was apparently stored with moth balls.  I put her in a box with several sticks of mint gum and the smell went away after about three months.

A baking soda bath? It's safer than bleach.

I would air them out, after a while the moth ball stink should dissipate.

I use to live in a basement that reeked of moth balls to repel wolf spiders and mice..  -_-

I would suggest leaving them outside for a few days to air them out. Maybe the smell of fall leaves will help get rid of it?

If that doesn't work.. I vaguely remember someone saying somewhere to spread toothpaste over them all but cutie marks/eyes etc. Can't remember the details on that though..

I have never hear of mint gum working, but I guess it could. I have been told dryer sheets and cat litter. But I have never tryed any of it before. I hope your able to get that smell out. I know that its very strong and can last for a very long time!

I would just let them air out for a while first and see if that makes a difference.

Baking soda will probably not work as its a neutraliser however kitty litter might as its an absorber.

Personally for moth balls I would try fresh air or at least in a position where there is fresh air flowing for 2 or 3 weeks - honestly that will probably be enough to clear the smell.

I poked about and found that (bear with me a second here) classic car collectors recommend an open container of activated charcoal to remove mothball smell from the vinyl seats of their old cars... since ponies are vinyl, I'm now wondering if keeping the ponies in a container along with an aerated container of activated charcoal might not have a similar effect?  So long as the ponies don't touch the charcoal, it might be worth a try...

But poor Daiyuflower... I totally sympathize, I can't stand the scent of mothballs.  I used to work a till in a grocery, and when autumn came and the elderly folk in the neighbourhood took their winter coats out of storage... yeeeeek! :yucky:
