Conditioning pony hair
« on: October 10, 2012, 10:34:57 PM »
I have seen some amazing restorations of pony hair on here and most everyone attributes it to conditioning (amongst other treatments).  So, since my Glory has been with me since 1984 or so and has the frizzy tail of the well-loved, I've been thinking of trying to condition her tail.  The thing is I'm a tree-hugger and the only conditioner I use is Aubrey Organics.  I'm concerned that the silicone and such that I don't want on my hair is exactly what pony hair needs.  Has anyone tried conditioning pony hair with an all natural conditioner or should I go pick up some Suave or something for this project?

I have used both natural conditioner (Nature's Gate) and cheap VO5. The VO5 does work better. The natural stuff left the pony hair feeling a little dry.

Since pony hair is based on a chemical, I wouldn't use organic products on it.  It seems to react most favorably to shampoos and conditioners that are used for chemically-treated hair.  ;)  I know if I'm using a flat iron, I use the conditioner that's meant to be used in conjunction with heat, like Therma-Silk.

Thanks lovesbabysquirmy!  I never thought of getting any particular kind of conditioner.  I'll look for those for chemically-treated hair!

I've had great results with liquid fabric softener. Makes them smell nice too!

Just spread it on, comb it through, and let it sit for ten minutes.

Since I dye my hair about every 3 weeks, I have an over abundance of the tubes of conditioner they give you in the dye boxes.  That's pretty much all that I use on the ponies for conditioning.  I wash their hair with a shower gel that has patchouli oil in it, which seems to make things super shiny as well.

Thanks coinoperatedgirl!  I was wondering about what to use for cleansing hair as well.

Such interesting suggestions! I should try them on my Blossom and Parasol. Thanks everyone and special appreciation to Sumire for asking a great question. :ohyeah:
