Customizing questions
« on: October 07, 2012, 04:34:52 PM »
So I recently started my first custom. Pretty basic, just hairing/ detailing my CaM Seamonster. I have a few questions though!
- Is Mod Podge waterproof? I used it to seal her fins, tentacles, and ears. I also painted her scalp and sealed it so the scalp isn't as visible under the hair. I also want to use it to attach flocking to her for a shaved look, but since it's water base should I use something else? If I do use another product, would I be good to apply it right over the Mod Podge, or should I remove it all and start over?
- Do I need to glue the hair after knotting it in? If so, what's the best stuff to use?

Thanks!

I don't think Original Modge Podge is waterproof, but I could be wrong.  I knwo there are waterproof types out there though.

I hear Fabri-Tac is good for gluing hair into MH dolls, and that it is waterproof.

~Modge Podge is water based, and not terribly waterproof.  A really nice sealant is Testor's Dullcote spray (at hobby stores).  It may not be 100% waterproof, but at least seems water resistant.  Making flocking waterproof can be quite tricky, not sure what the best glue would be on that one.
~Fabrictac, she's absolutely right!  It has a nice fast set up time too.

I'd say the Fabri-Tac, which states on the bottle it's waterproof when dry. I've never used flocking though, and I know that frabri-tac is a bit thick, so not sure how well it works with that.

Fabri-Tac is awesome! I use it for my ponies, and it works great. :)

So I went to Michael's today, and I picked up some stuff that'll hopefully work.

- Outdoor Mod Podge. Sounds like it's more waterproof, but we shall see...
- 99 cent flocking! Woohoo! I found a bottle of emerald-y green, which I think will go nicely with her color scheme.

I don't care what method of rehairing you used, I always reccomend gluing it. And you can use modge podge for that. I just tend to dump a bunch in the head and roll it around, then stamp the areas that don't get covered with a q-tip...When I do it to ponies I generally just put the swab in my modge podge and dab the inside of the head where the plugs are..But either way lol. Testors dull coat gives you a lot more freedom with paint work but I don't know that it would be great for water proofing. Out of curiousity, though, why do you want her water proof?

Thanks for the tips! I thought gluing would be my best bet.
As far as waterproofing goes, I usually get doll/ pony hair we in order to make it easier to style. I'd hate to do that and have her paint work end up a gloopy sticky mess.
