Restoration question! Can she be saved?
« on: October 04, 2012, 09:28:56 AM »
I went to a thrift store yesterday looking for something entirely different, and to my surprise, I found G1 Bright Eyes!  After cleaning her up, she has lovely hair, nice symbols, and even still has loads of coating on her eyes!  She has one big flaw, though.  There's a big black mark on the NDS side of her face.  I didn't get the greatest shot, but to me, it almost looks like newsprint transfer.  It's black, it looks like it's gone right into the plastic, and it's on the highest points (which is why it looks like ink transfer).  I've tried soap and water, and magic eraser, but it looks like it's stained in.  It almost looks like mold in the photo, but there's a really fine pattern that reminds me of print in person.

Here's some shots before I cleaned her;

Any ideas?  Anyone tried to sunfade bright eyes before?  It's heading into winter here, and I've got uv coating on most of my windows, so I'm not even sure if that's an option.  It's a shame, because otherwise she's really nice!  thanks guys!

Have you tried pure acetone yet? (applied with a q-tip of course)

Some of it does seem ingrained though.

Did you try getting her really hot? Plastic is porous, and like human pores, it opens up when heated.

Try really hot water, then going with the magic eraser.

Try Acetone first and if that doesn't work I think sun-fading will do the trick for you- I haven't done bright eyes but I have use it on other blue ponies without harm :)

I would try the acetone on a q-tip (or goof off...just be careful it will strip any paint)

Will hot water damage the eye coating?  I'm not sure about acetone, but I do have goof off.  For $0.50 she's still totally worth it, but she would be SO nice if I can clean this up!  Thanks for the help!

Lucky! I hope it works out for you. I would take her along next time you take a hot back and let her soak with you. You can cover her eyes if you are worried about them. Take a magic eraser and fingernails (lol) with you and scrub scrub scrub!

Acetone!  My best friend.  I rarely clean ponies without it.  ^_^

Acetone should take out any surface stains and after that, yeah, I would say sunfade if there are still marks left.  :)

I ll second the hot water & eraser, then acetone and then sunfading to get it out. Even in that condition she is worth it for $0.50 she is quite an expensive pony so I would give restoration a go - if water and acetone or goof off dont work sunfading will, although perhaps you ll need to wait for summer to give her a good go!

Good luck!

Just be careful to keep the acetone away from her eyes - it'll take off the pearly coating (and eye paint/symbols).

Congrats on the lovely pony :)

I would have said sunfading too if nailpolish remover didn't work. But sunfading sounds tricky when you have UV coated windows.

At least the stain is on the pony's non-display side. Maybe it's not that big problem if it's not visible on display, like in the first pic? :)

I think a few go's with a Magic Eraser and hot water might do her some good. Best of luck!
