Sealant Question
« on: October 01, 2012, 02:44:28 AM »
I've found a custom that I might want to purchase but it's had a FBR and apparently only it's eyes have been sealed (mod-podge), is this normal practice? Is the pony going to stay in nice condition without a full body coat of sealant?

Thanks  ^.^

In my experience, the pony should be ok, but the paint is more susceptible to scratching without being sealed.

You may be able to seal it yourself if it is a simple design. You would just water down some mod podge to the consistency of milk, and brush it on and let it fry. Be sure to tie her hair up securely out of the way.

You could also try and spray on some dullcote, but you would need to tie up AND shield her hair.

If she has gems and doo-dads decorating her, I wouldn't try sealing her.. Just always handle her very gently.

I'd be worried of mucking up the pony by sealing it myself. I don't have any of those good brands and the one I use is pretty good but has done horrible things in the past.

Are there any pictures of her online that you can share? In the event that she looks like she could be sealed, if the person who has her isn' wanting to do it, you could always have her shipped first to another customizer who is local either to you or the seller, and have them do it for a small fee. Otherwise, just be gentle :)

The pony is on ebay and the seller is a member here, Emerring (hasn't been active for years tho). It looks like she has pretty good custom feedback so I think the pony should be okay. I'll treat it right ^.^
Thanks for the advice

I've purchased from Emerring before and everything I have purchase has been VERY sealed.  (I won't say more about that :P) Have you considered asking her to seal it for you?  Her ponies are durable, I even let a kiddo play with one (they adore the yarn hair) and the pony was perfectly fine years later.

I got outbid, I was asleep when it ended and feel silly for not putting a higher bid but I'm glad she's found a home (I'd seen the same pony not sell a few times and finally decided to bid).
I'll keep an eye on her customs though, I think the yarn hair is the cutest ^.^
Thanks for the advice
