Advise on my custom?
« on: September 18, 2012, 08:02:07 AM »
I bought the build a monster pack the other day, and was delighted to see I could make my own cat :D (witch doll is up for trade) Buuuut I have some problems. I successfully cut her hair, I repainted her lips, added blush and silver eye shadow, and glow in the dark gleams in her eyes, but I can NOT for the life of me get her ears to stay on ;o;

Has anyone else had this problem? I was thinking of each actually pushing holes into her head or wig but I dunno...

Here she is so far, her names Tabbytha McWhiskerville

I finally got my ears to stay on, but the bulky barrette at the bottom made it look so stupid. I've heard from a bunch of people here that they cut off the barrette and glue a small nail on the bottom of the ear, then pierce the head with the nail. I need to do this with my fox girl custom I am working on. Maybe someone can post their pix. I really hate those barrettes. Poorly designed, Mattel.

Also, your cat girl is super cute! I love how you did her hair so much!!

Oh gosh, I was afraid she would fall flat with all of the other gorgeous customs I've seen ;-; That really made me happy, thank you!!!

And they really went through such extreme measures for the ears? I hope some people will post pics of their results so I can decide whats best for me.

I wonder if the ears could be attatched to the wig itself, then you wouldn't have to damage the head.

Yes, you really did a great job. I hate that wig, and you made it look totally natural!

I'll take the wig off and see if I can do it without damage. And THANK YOU T_T I was so nervous doing this, I was afraid it'd look horrible!!

I love what you've done with her:)  The changes are nice and subtle.  She looks as though Mattel re-released her.  Very nice.

I can tell you what I do with the ears (but to be honest, I've been thinking about doing the nail thing.  Seems sturdier, in my mind) I cut the clasp thingie off, and poke the peg thingie through the wig cap.  Then I take the clasp thingie I cut off and attach it to the inside of the wig cap on the peg thingie.  This pinches the ears to the wig cap.  It's not as secure as it sounds, though:(  No damage to the head:)  Every method has it's positives and negatives, I guess.  Even if nails damage the head, the only time you'll see the damage is if you display her without hair.

My werewolf girls ears are attached to her wig in the way grzankitter describes, but I think I may try attaching them on to straight pins instead as well.

Yea, those ears are annoying. I think more people have problems to attach them (and look good on the wig too). Mine looked ridiculous, so i left those ears out.

I have two methods that I've tired and use on my girls....

Jordan's ears are clipped on in the way that Mattel intended, but I took straight pins and put them through the middle of the clip, into her head to keep her ears secured. They've been like that for the past three ANTM challenges, and I haven't had to mess with them once. You can see the little silver heads of the pins at the base of her ears ~>

For her sisters, They both had the pegs and clips cut off the bottoms of the ears, then I took my dremel and drilled a tiny way into the ear. I then glued a straight pin into the hole and filled in the hole the rest of the way with glue as well. So far so good with these, however I'm a bit cautious when messing with their hair.

In this picture you can see both methods next to each other. Louisa's ears stick out a little above her hair, but  you can see how Kady's hair is styled around the ears, and Jordan's are pinned down.

Hope this helps!

I think the cat ears look funny to begin with, though.  I don't know why they felt the need to mold new ones.  What was wrong with the wolf ear mold?  I've only seen one set of cat ears I liked and that's because the person who owns them cut them down.  I'm SO tempted to do the same.  I'm afraid I'll mess it up though:(  Those cat ears are just too big.

Can't remember who has the custom cat with smaller ears.  They re-rooted her in Ghoulia's hair.  Maybe they can re-post pics, and describe how they "fixed" the ears ;)

Even fixed with nails, the cat ears look huge. Honestly, they kind of look like small rabbit ears.

I thought maybe they made the ears bigger because the big, fluffy wigs were obscuring them, but then they include this thin, flat wig.  I thought I might try using a different wig, but bluechaos is using a LIV wig, and they STILL look massive

Yup, she's wearing a LIV wig. It's pretty full for a wig too, but still the ears look huge.
