My Little Pony meets Blu-tack!
« on: September 12, 2012, 02:48:04 PM »
Hello everyone!

I'd like to introduce you to my latest My Little Pony art project, which is a blu-tack version of Cotton Candy. 3 years ago I started sculpting with blu-tack, not because it was the most practical material in the world but because it was a challenge and a novelty that I could get pretty good results with it. It's very versatile, and reacts to heat, so as long as your sculptures are kept at room temperature and great pressure isn't put on them, they retain their shape very well once cold/hardened. I made my friend a blu-tack Pokemon Dragonite 2 or 3 years ago (http://rachelbrownoid.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d2skzwo), which he showed me only the other week, and it looks as good as new!

Anway, here comes Cotton Candy. She's based on the original G1 model, but with longer hair, because I found it extremely difficult to model the short hair on such a small scale. I've been really busy with school of late, but now that my schedule has freed up a little I hope to make more of these. I think the other five original G1 ponies would be a nice start, what d'you reckon?

I'd love to hear all of your opinions! :)

Blu-tack... like the putty stuff my teachers used to use to hang posters on their walls?!  I had no idea you could sculpt with that!

Thank you everyone! :) Yeah ZennaBug, most commonly it's used for sticking posters and such to walls...I don't think it's officially considered a modelling material, but that's the fun of it :D

Wow! This looks really, really cool!

I never knew you could sculpt things with Blue-Tack! The more you know... XD Now, I'm really tempted to go and buy a couple packets of Blue-Tack to try sculpting something out of it, lol.  :silly:

But in all seriousness, this looks really good. One question though: did you use some sort of paint to paint the body, or does Blue-Tack come in other colors than blue and I'm just unaware of it?

Aww, thank you Moonracer! :) I should have mentioned that it's painted in acrylic, which covers pretty well after a few coats. I think you can actually get pink blue-tack though, haha!

You have me curious on how that stuff will keep it's sculpted shape for a while. I don't think the US has blu-tack but there is something similar XD
My DeviantArt, why not drop by and take a look!

Awww, thank you thank you thank you everyone!! Your compliments mean so much to me :) I'm hoping to start my second pony sometime this week. Cotton Candy is now on DA, if you're interested in seeing more of her - http://rachelbrownoid.deviantart.com/#/d5fqwjv . Sd_dreamcrystal, if she was squidged hard she would be completely ruined (I learnt the hard way when I dropped a book on one of my sculptures once, haha), but as blu-tack primarily reacts to heat, at room temperature it's pretty solid, which is why the sculptures I made for my friends have lasted so long. It's great stuff!
