« on: September 12, 2012, 11:22:49 AM »
So I just got a huge box of ponies from my fiance.... and I opened up the box and was BLASTED in the fact with the smell of cigarette smoke, All of the ponies smell like that, and I"m so allergic it makes me ill just trying to deal with the ponies.

How can I get rid of that smell? What do I have to do?

Air freshener? Let them air out by an open window? Or stick a few fabric softener sheets in the box? Hope you find a solution <3

Kitty litter (unused lol XD ) And baking soda work really well for absorbing odors!!Put an open tupperware container of it in the box, close it up, and get it away from you so you don't have to smell it ><

They need a bath first to get the tar off of them. They will be sticky with it.

I used antibacterial soap to remove mouse pee smell on ponies, so it should work for cigarette smoke. They definitely need a bath

I was going to suggest this! This is the method I usually see in pony cleaning threads.

Time and open air space works wonders. Everything else can get them to smell better from a distance so you should give them a good cleaning and use the other suggestions first, but only time in clean air will make it so you can put your nose up to them.

I never had luck with anything but bleach for smoke smell on ponies, but I am VERY sensitive to smoke.  (I tried kitty litter, fabric softener, baking soda in the freezer... nothing worked.)  But when I washed them in a bleach water, it worked.  Just be careful and don't soak them in it - it's better as a scrub and wipe method.

yeah... those are all good ideas, I'll have to try probably all of them.

I'm so highly allergic to it that I just don't know how much I'm going to be able to handle it to get it clean.

for now I put them in a box with kitty litter, taped the box up, sprayed the top of the box with fabreeze, sealed that in a garbage bag and locked it up in my bathroom with an open window

I have a baby pony that smelled like smoke when I got her :) I just set her on the shelf and aired her out, she is getting better but it's taking a while.

But the suggestions in here are great for speeding up the process :)

I second this.
I had a smelly pony and I tried kitty litter, baking soda, etc... and the only thing that really worked was fresh air---- and time

mint denture cleaner works faster than baking soda.  usually two-three tabs in a bowl and soaking the pony.  treat 2 or 3 times and you should be good. I've never had this affect symbols or flocking.
