bleeding / weepig dye ?!?
« on: September 09, 2012, 08:08:44 AM »
so i was cleaning my flat foot cotton candy and took her head off to get rid of the rusty washers and clean her out. much to my dismay the water i dumped out of her while giving her a bath had turned pink. I am wondering has anyone else noticed this ? Now I certainly know why she has that sun fade look despite never being in the sun at all.  I will be keeping an eye on my other flat foot ponies from now on just in case. As far as I can tell this is the only thing happening to her she is not going rock hard, tacky, bow legged or otherwise.

I've heard that some people suspect that leaking plasticizer may potentially carry the dye with it...maybe that's what going on?

That is interesting! Did it seem to alter her color at all?

I had a Seashell that as I cleaned her the dye in her plastic came off on my magic eraser. There are spots where she is substantially lighter than what she should be after I cleaned her. She is bait anyway, so I did not really think twice about it.

I am not sure about that if the plasticizers  is leaking they are usually tacky, or have a powdery look to them.  As for color altering she is now a faded pink, the ONLY thing i used on her was soap and water.

I have a question since it was brought up. I had the same problem with a Blossom I cleaned with a magic eraser, but it hasn't happened with any since then. When I was looking through threads here one day someone mentioned early purple ponies having dye issues ect. Is that true? If so is it like all the G1s or just the first couple years?

well from what i have seen it has affected blossom, sea shell, and cotton candy. All other gen 1 flat foot or otherwise have been fine with me but i will monitor them. I am wondering if this will wind up being batch specific, If anyone out there has had this issue please pm me.

I have a FF Cotton Candy  that was covered in plasticizer leak - so very sticky and yes, it did bring some of the dye out when I cleaned her out with soap.  But I'm sure it was already on the surface of the plastic so my cleaning didn't do it.

This does happen with some ponies. Especially purple ones. There was a thread a few months ago regrading this... (Sorry, I don't have time to dig it up...)

It is predominantly seen in purple ponies - Windy, Blossom, Seashell and Tickle colours - they are notorious for their dye leaching out. Whether thats due to the red or blue or combined red/blue being unstable I dont know.

I dont think its too surprising that over the years the basic pigments in a pony plastic may leach out of the plastic a little...hopefully she is only a little less pink :)
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Here's a photo (before rust removal, ugh):

Maybe you can see how around the neck ring and plug, the plastic is much pinker?  When I scrubbed her with a toothbrush, my bristles got all pink.  So I know that the pigment was resting on the surface as the plasticizer leaked out.  :)

I got a lovely Baby Rainribbon as a trade awhile back... I thought she had purple marker allover her head (like that bright pinkish-purple color). I cleaned it off and her head is significently lighter than her body and still has that pinkish hue.
I don't know if you can really tell in this pic...

P.S. invaderhorizongreen... if you're looking for a better condition FF cotton candy I do have an extra...
