Any dog experts out there?
« on: September 07, 2012, 04:49:41 PM »
Well we're ending up getting a third dog in the house...because my grandma is in rehab and she'll be coming to live with us soon. My biggest concern: how my little 8 month old female puppy, who's fixed, will get along with a 1 year old dog?

I know theres stuff like let them sniff eachother to get to know, I just wonder...well...once she walks in, where should I start? Because I know the new dog will be completely nervous.

With one at 8 months, thing should be ok. Usually they are still very much puppies and are accepted rather quickly. I recommend keeping them on leads or a baby gate between them or some sort of restraint at first meeting. Nothing that doesn't allow them to move rather freely, but something that can keep them from hurting one another if things aren't ok. Short cautious meeting are good at first and always under supervision. I'm sure things will be fine though.

I think it depends on the personalities of the dogs...
I know it is recommended that the dogs meet each other on neutral grounds and go for a walk together for their first meeting.

I would definitely take them out for a walk together first. The resident dogs may be grumpy towards the new pup for a couple of weeks, the new pup will have to learn rules and boundaries so there may be a few grumbles. I would suggest not leaving them unsupervised together for the first couple of days and see how you go :)

Just give the older dogs lots of love and treats, as long as it doesn't growl or anything. Don't give it any reasons to become jealous over the new dog and you should be fine. I also think taking them for a walk together at first is a good idea.

I vote introduce them in neutral territory.  Let them sniff and get to know each other outside before bringing the new dog in.  With luck, they'll get along well enough that the transition will be smooth.  My dogs got along immediately as soon as my dachshund realized that the bunny I put on the floor was actually a puppy and that she would chase him if he teased her.  They played until they were exhausted and that was it.  But maybe I was just lucky.
