New Dog Help!
« on: September 02, 2012, 11:03:46 AM »
Hubby and I adopted a new dog yesterday - male, neutered 2 years old. We already have a 9 year old female dog and 2 female cats.

Problem with the new guy is he marks all  over the house :( I wonder if anyone knows how we can cure him of this? Or could this be a temporary thing since he's new to the house. I just don't want to end up with pee stains all over the house if theres anything we can do to cure him of this habit.

I unfortunately have not caught him in the act yet so I can tell him "no" when he does it unless I catch him.

I assume you're in the house with him most of the day? If so, keep him on a line attached to you so you're always there if he marks. Intercept him and take him straight outside with plenty of praise. If he's marking while you're out, I suggest crate training him.

Supposedly if you keep him in a crate, they are less likely to do their thing in there because they sense it as their space or something like that. Bubbles was never crate trained though so no idea if its true or not. I used wee wee pads for him but I also heard those can teach them its OK to go in the house...
he is a pain because he does not bark to go out - he just STARES at you and gets really lovable, unless its really urgent then he starts to growl at you.

You have to treat him just like you would a puppy and take him out often and keep him in the same room as you and keep a close eye out to catch him in the act. Assume you are housetraining a new dog all over again (though this should take less time than a puppy). Bring him out to go potty and praise him when he does. Also is your female spayed?

Even after neutering some male dogs continue to mark. My sister's males mark and she crates the Chihuahua and puts the lab mix outside when she can't be home with them.

Retraining sounds like the best option.  ^.^

I agree with everyone else.  Treat him like a puppy and just start from scratch.  I'm sure he'll figure it out quickly.  Congrats on the new dog!

I guess the crucial thing is to catch him in the act so he learns he is not supposed to do it. seems like you´ll have to stalk him for a few days :)

Definitely retrain.  I was in a similar position when I adopted my boy at 1 1/2 years old and it's just what I had to do with him.  It didn't take very long once we were seriously into it.  Good luck!

While you are not home you could also try putting a belly band on him (they have them on Etsy). One of my boys liked to mark while we weren't home and he peed once with the belly band on and then never again lol! Retraining is the best solution though :)

I work at a pet store and get asked this all the time. So fear not, you aren't the only one dealing with this issue! Crating him will probably help. However, taking him outside to pee all the time isn't really going to solve anything as he's not piddling because he really has to go - he's doing it because it's a new environment. You could try pee pads that have an attractant or there are spray products out there called "No Mark". It's also SUPER important to have a clean up product that is enzymatic as that will get rid of any left-over scent and prevent him from going back to that same spot. It should all stop once he establishes that this is his "place" and finally feels at home.

In the mean time, good luck! And you should post pictures of the four-legged kiddos! I'm sure they're super adorable :)
